Old Market Battambang: The unique riverside lifestyle at the evening market

When talking about Battambang, the Cambodian border town next to Chanthaburi province of Thailand, many might think of Wat Phnom Sampov or the Bamboo Train. But for me, Mr.Hotsia, the thing I like most and that truly makes me feel connected to this city is strolling throughOld Market Battambangin the evening. This market is located by the river, bustling with people, locals, and vendors. Besides being filled with truly fresh produce, it also tells the story of life here better than expected.

Old Market Battambang does not start early like typical fresh markets in Thailand but becomes lively from late morning until evening. When I visited, it was from mid-afternoon to evening. This is the time when people come to buy fresh fish caught by fishermen from the river that day. The fish displayed on fresh green banana leaves look lively. Interestingly, they do not put water in trays or containers here; the fish swim slowly on the banana leaves as if allowed to breathe naturally, which is clearly different from fish markets in Thailand.

Some fish species I saw here are rare in Thailand, such as the sweet carp, which has a sweet and delicate taste just like I tasted at the sweet carp rice porridge stall in this old market itself. (If interested in local Battambang cuisine, you can read more in the articleBattambang Food and Cuisine). Walking through this market is not just about buying food or fresh produce but also about learning the culture and lifestyle of Cambodians in this border town, which remains simple and warm.

Atmosphere and Colors of the Old Market

Old Market Battambang offers a variety of products, not just fish but also fresh vegetables, fruits, and many kinds of dried goods neatly displayed. What makes this market stand out is that you will hear locals speaking Thai fluently because this area borders Thailand and there is close cross-border communication. Like me, Mr.Hotsia, who traveled here, you don’t have to worry about the language.

The market also has many kinds of fermented fish products. Honestly, I have seen only a few types in Thailand, but here there is a wide selection. This is definitely a notable local food source. This market is not just a place to shop but a cultural hub of food and the true lifestyle of Battambang people.

Strolling the Old Market and Traveling Around Battambang

For me, Mr.Hotsia, traveling in Battambang is not limited to visiting famous places like Wat Phnom Sampov or riding the Bamboo Train. Walking around the town and the old market is also a very worthwhile experience. Battambang is a small city; walking through the old market covers it all without the hassle of hiring tuk-tuks, as I previously wrote in the articleTraveling Battambang (Pattambang)The roads here are good, and traveling from the permanent border checkpoint at Ban Phak Kad, Chanthaburi province, is very convenient. This road was newly built, making visiting Battambang much easier.

If you come here, I recommend visiting the Old Market Battambang at least once in the evening because it is the place where you can see the real lifestyle of Cambodians in this city. It is a market that still preserves its traditional and local charm very well.

Relaxing and Tasting Local Food in the Old Market Area

After walking around the market, if you get hungry, I, Mr.Hotsia, highly recommend a sweet carp rice porridge stall I really like. It is located in the middle of the old market and offers chicken rice porridge and sweet carp rice porridge with flavors similar to simple Thai home-style food. If you enjoy simple yet deeply delicious tastes, this is a spot you should not miss. I personally ate two bowls and two plates of carp fish, feeling full and impressed by the freshness and authentic taste of Battambang’s local food.Read more about Battambang cuisine

For accommodation in Battambang city, I recommend choosing a clean and well-serviced guesthouse like “Lux Guesthouse,” where I stayed. It is affordable, comfortable, with English-speaking staff and very kind owners. Staying here made me feel at home and made it easy to find tuk-tuks from the hotel to tour the city.Check accommodation details in Battambang here
