Rural Villages of Battambang: The Charm of Authentic Khmer Life That mr.hotsia Must Share
If you ask me, mr.hotsia, which place in Battambang impressed and fascinated me the most, the answer is very simple — the rural villages in this province. Although Battambang has famous attractions such asPhnom Sampov Templeor Banan Temple, what I like the most is traveling to small villages that still preserve the traditional way of life of true Khmer people, something hard to find in big cities or even in Thailand.
Banan Village is the destination I chose to experience the rural atmosphere. Here, locals still use oxen and horses to pull carts for traveling between rice fields and villages. Seeing this scene felt like stepping back in time before technology dominated daily life. I also tried riding a cart for the first time in my life. When the tuk-tuk I was riding passed by an ox cart, I asked the driver to stop so I could experience it. It was a feeling both new and warmly indescribable.
Besides Banan Village, I also had the chance to ridethe bamboo trainto nearby forest villages. Riding the bamboo train is an experience everyone should try once in their life. The simplicity of the train made from bamboo took me winding through nature and rice fields. Then I tried riding a horse cart again to observe the villagers’ lifestyle that still follows traditional ways.
What impressed me as much as the lifestyle were the smiles and warm welcomes from the locals. They were helpful and shared their life stories in a friendly manner, making me feel like part of the community.
Traveling and Living in Battambang
For travelers wanting to visit Battambang, I, mr.hotsia, recommend starting from the Ban Pak Kad permanent border checkpoint in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand, which is about 100 kilometers from Battambang city. The roads here are newly built and very convenient. If anyone wants to stop and explore before reaching Battambang, they can stay in Pailin city, only 26 kilometers from the border (read more details atTravel Battambang (Battambang))
Upon arriving in Battambang city, I usually enjoy walking around the fresh market to truly experience local life. The market here is not as developed as in big cities, giving it a very natural atmosphere. Walking through the market, you will see fresh vegetables, fruits, and a variety of local foods.
Local Food of Battambang Recommended by mr.hotsia
Speaking of food in Battambang, it’s fun and interesting because many dishes are similar to Thai food but have unique flavors and cooking methods. I recommend the sweet fish rice porridge shop in the old Battambang market. Here, the rice porridge is plain white rice porridge served with sweet boiled fish with rich flavor and no annoying bones. It’s a dish I liked so much I had two bowls along with two plates of the fish (read more restaurant reviews atBattambang Food)
There are also other local dishes such as curry rice served separately as the Khmer prefer, not poured over rice like in Thailand. You can also find roasted duck, grilled chicken, and fried birds sold on the street for casual tasting. For those who like international food, don’t worry because there are Western and Indian restaurants near the accommodations.
Relaxing in Battambang with Impressive Accommodations
Accommodation in Battambang is another important matter for me, mr.hotsia. There are many hotels and guesthouses with a wide range of prices from hundreds to thousands of baht. On my last trip, I stayed at Lux Guesthouse, a new, clean hotel with air conditioning, hot water, and staff who speak some English, which made communication much easier (read more accommodation reviews atHotels and Guesthouses in Battambang)
However, I recommend everyone check the room carefully before booking, especially cleanliness and odors, because I once had a problem with bed bugs. Choosing a clean place will make your stay more enjoyable and safe.
Highlights Not to Miss: Cart Riding and Bamboo Train
One experience I highly recommend everyone try when visiting Battambang is riding a cart pulled by oxen or horses. It’s like a living reflection of the past. I never thought I would actually ride a cart until I came to Banan Village and asked the tuk-tuk driver to stop so I could experience it. It’s a simple yet very powerful feeling.
Another highlight is riding theBattambang Bamboo Trainwhich is a unique feature here. The bamboo train takes you winding through nature and small villages that still preserve traditional lifestyles. Experiencing this atmosphere made me feel like I stepped into a world where time stands still.
Summary of Experiences mr.hotsia Wants You to Feel
Battambang is not just about famous temples or castles but also hides beauty in the simple and warm lifestyle of the locals. The rural villages here still maintain ways of life that are rare to find nowadays. I, mr.hotsia, invite everyone to live slowly, try cart riding, ride the bamboo train, stroll through fresh markets, and savor delicious local food with charm like no other.
I believe that if you visit Battambang with an open heart and willingness to learn, you will experience happiness and wonderful memories that will stay with you for life.
