Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong: The giant holding a club, symbol of central Battambang

When talking about Battambang, a Cambodian border province closest to Thailand, many people probably think of Banan Temple, the bamboo train, or the Khmer Rouge Killing Caves. But for me, mr.hotsia, one place that impressed me and was as unique as any in Battambang is “Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong,” a giant statue holding a large club standing proudly in the roundabout beside the provincial high school.

This statue was built around 2000 AD, inspired by the name of the city “Battambang,” which in Khmer language is called “Battambang,” literally meaning “lost club.” There are long-standing stories and beliefs about this name. The province decided to create a giant holding a wooden club as a symbol and a local object of worship. The Khmer people call this giant “Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong,” which literally means “the venerable monk holding a club.”

My Real Experience with Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong

The first time I, mr.hotsia, heard the name Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong was by chance while I was at a hair salon gathering travel news about Battambang (read about my hair salon travel info in Battambang atHair Salon Travel Info in Battambang). At that time, I didn’t know there was a giant statue holding a club in Battambang. After asking locals and hearing that this place is a spot where both Thai and Khmer people often make vows and pray for blessings, and it is said that wishes made to Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong “come true,” I didn’t hesitate and hired a tuk-tuk to visit it myself.

When I arrived, I saw the giant club-holding statue standing tall and prominent. Many locals regularly bring grilled pork or various offerings to perform rituals of gratitude. I secretly captured the atmosphere of people gathering continuously to worship, as if this place is not just an ordinary statue but a true center of faith for the people of Battambang.

Strolling Around Battambang with Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong

Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong is located next to the provincial high school, which gave me a great chance to see Khmer school uniforms for the first time, as before this I rarely encountered Khmer school uniforms directly, mostly seeing those from Laos or Vietnam.

The afternoon atmosphere around Battambang city is quite peaceful and safe. Walking around and taking photos was very enjoyable. I recommend friends interested in visiting to explore the city on foot because the city is small, easy to walk around, and very clean, unlike many big cities in Cambodia I have visited.

If you plan to travel to Battambang, don’t forget to stop by and see Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong at this roundabout. It’s a spot that truly reflects the local lifestyle and beliefs.

Local Beliefs and Culture

The story of Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong reflects the deep connection of Battambang people with legends and traditional beliefs. Many locals told me that Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong is not just a city symbol but also a place to make vows and pray for various matters, whether health, work, or luck.

I personally witnessed people making vows seriously and seeing results. Some come to fulfill vows with grilled pork or various foods. It’s a scene I feel is rarely found in Thailand. This strong faith and lifestyle make me want to recommend everyone to see it with their own eyes at least once.

Connections to Other Attractions in Battambang

Speaking of Battambang, I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to plan a complete trip, not just to see Luang Ta Dam Bong Dong Yuong but also to visit other important places such asWat Phnom Sampovwhich has a rich history related to the Khmer Rouge era, or try riding theBattambang Bamboo Trainfamous for its uniqueness and fun experience.

Travel and Accommodation Tips

For traveling to Battambang, I recommend crossing the Ban Phak Kad checkpoint in Chanthaburi province, then taking a bus or shared taxi to the city. Battambang is about 100 kilometers from the border. The roads are new and very convenient. Or if you want to stop by Pailin city first, that’s also suitable (read more atTravel Battambang (Battambang))

Accommodations in Battambang range from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels. I, mr.hotsia, stayed at “Lux Guesthouse,” which is clean and affordable, about 300 baht per night (read accommodation reviews atHotels and Guesthouses in Battambang)
