Morning wake-up in Sihanoukville, Cambodia with a local-style meal

Speaking of Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, a small seaside town in Cambodia not widely known among Thai tourists. I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to visit here several times, and what impresses me every time is the morning atmosphere and the authentic local breakfast.

Travel route to Sihanoukville

My journey to this city started from Trat Province, Thailand, which has the Ban Hat Lek border crossing in Khlong Yai District, connecting Thailand and Cambodia. On the opposite side is Koh Kong Province, known locally as “Khet Koh Kong.” This route is suitable for travelers who want to experience the real border life and a relaxed atmosphere.Traveling from Trat to SihanoukvilleTake an air-conditioned bus from Bangna to Trat, about 4 hours, then cross the border by another vehicle for a few hours to reach Sihanoukville.

Early morning at Sihanoukville fresh market

I stayed in downtown Sihanoukville near the night market and the local morning market, which is an indoor market with a variety of goods, from fresh vegetables and fruits to dried goods and clothing. Walking around the market in the morning allowed me to see the true way of life of the locals. Schoolchildren walked to school with teachers warmly welcoming them. I saw children helping to pick up trash by the roadside. These scenes reminded me of my childhood when teachers asked us to clean up in front of the school.

This fresh market is not crowded with tourists as one might think, unlike the beach where vendors carry goods on their heads to sell. I recommend taking a walk through the morning market.Sihanoukville MarketTo experience the genuine, unembellished local life

Sihanoukville breakfast with simple yet delicious flavors

The breakfast I had in Sihanoukville was truly a new experience. The night food stall in front of my hotel served fragrant chicken rice porridge and delicious stir-fried noodles that needed no extra seasoning. But my favorite dish, which I saw many locals eating, was “Grilled Pork Rice Bowl,” a southern Cambodian style similar to southern Vietnam. They grill the pork until the skin is crispy, served with a hot fried duck egg and topped with a special sauce. I ate this cautiously because I once had grilled pork left out too long with flies on it in Vietnam and got sick. So if you want to try this dish, eat it fresh off the grill.

Another charm of Sihanoukville is the vendors carrying goods on their heads, whether fresh fruit, snacks, or street food. You can see them walking around the city and beaches, which is a cute and unique image of this town.

Additionally, I tried Sihanoukville noodles, grilled stingray, and salted pork knuckle from a local Chinese restaurant. The food was flavorful, though some dishes resembled those at home but were nearly twice as expensive, something to be prepared for when visiting here.

Recommended accommodations and lifestyle in this seaside town

I stayed at Sihanouk Time Share Hotel located downtown, about a 10-minute walk from the beach or a convenient tuk-tuk ride. The accommodation is affordable with basic amenities but be cautious of power outages at night as electricity here is often unstable.View accommodation information in SihanoukvilleTo prepare and plan well

Sihanoukville is a seaside town where foreign tourists and Cambodians come to relax more than Thais. It’s like Pattaya without beer bars or chaos. The beaches are clean, the sea water is clear, and although the sand is not as white as Koh Samet, the environment and atmosphere make you feel truly relaxed.Read more travel information about Sihanoukville

Summary of the breakfast experience in Sihanoukville with mr.hotsia

For me, waking up early, walking the fresh market, watching local life, and eating grilled pork rice bowls, chicken rice porridge, or stir-fried noodles in Sihanoukville is an experience unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s like seeing the real life of the people here, not just passing tourism.

If anyone wants to change the atmosphere, come to experience the quiet and reality of a seaside town not yet crowded with Thai tourists. I recommend planning your trip and experiencing it yourself. You will love Sihanoukville as much as mr.hotsia does.
