Khmer Desserts at Sihanoukville Beach: Flavors and Coastal Life of Cambodia by mr.hotsia
When talking about Sihanoukville Beach or Kampong Som, the seaside resort town in Cambodia that mr.hotsia has visited many times, besides the beautiful sea, clear water, and the atmosphere that remains natural and not as crowded as Pattaya in Thailand, one thing that impressed me greatly was the “Khmer desserts” that local vendors carry on their heads, walking and selling to tourists and locals on the beach with lively energy.
On my latest trip, I chose to sit and relax bySihanoukville Beachin the late afternoon at Victory Beach, a popular beach among backpackers and locals. Besides the calm sea atmosphere perfect for relaxation, I also met Khmer dessert vendors carrying trays with various sweets walking along the beach, making the scene more colorful and warm.
Most Khmer desserts I tried were made from simple local ingredients such as sticky rice flour, coconut milk, and palm sugar. The sweet and rich aroma of coconut milk combined with the chewy softness of sticky rice flour made these snacks delicious and very fresh seaside treats. Some had bright colors, like pink steamed desserts, luk chup sweets, or sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. Every bite gave a homely feeling but was full of the care and craftsmanship of local people.
What makes these Khmer beach desserts different from others is that the vendors skillfully balance trays of sweets on their heads, accompanied by genuine Khmer smiles and greetings. This made me feel like I was truly experiencing the local way of life here, not just superficial tourism like in other places.
If anyone wants to try these Khmer desserts, mr.hotsia recommends visiting Victory Beach in the afternoon or evening because vendors walk around selling continuously. If you stay in town or near the beach, you can easily buy these snacks to enjoy while watching the sunset on the beach. Experiencing fresh flavors directly from the vendors like this is rare in major tourist spots.
Travel and Relaxation in Sihanoukville
For travelers coming from Thailand like me, traveling to Sihanoukville is more convenient via the Ban Hat Lek border checkpoint in Trat Province, a permanent crossing that easily connects to Koh Kong Province in Cambodia.I have previously shared in an articlethat I chose to take an air-conditioned bus from Bangkok to Trat for convenience, then transferred to a cross-border bus to Sihanoukville at a very affordable price.
Upon arriving in Sihanoukville, I stayed at a hotel in the city center about a 10-minute walk to the beach or a convenient tuk-tuk ride. This area has fresh markets, night markets, and many local restaurants to choose from, including the Khmer dessert shops I mentioned. Accommodation in this zone starts at about 15 USD or around 450 THB, which is very good value for being close to real city life.
Local Life and Food in Sihanoukville
Besides Khmer desserts on the beach, made-to-order food at markets and street restaurants in Sihanoukville is another charm that mr.hotsia really enjoys, especially grilled pork rice bowls popular in this area and chicken rice porridge I had in the morning in front of the fresh market, which energized me for a full day of sightseeing.
If you want to know Khmer cuisine more deeply, I recommend readingmy article on Food and Restaurants in Sihanoukvillewhich gives an overview of diverse and tempting local dishes, as well as stories about vendors carrying goods on their heads, selling both in town and on the beach—a scene I think many Thai tourists are not yet familiar with.
