Eating Local Phnom Penh Street Food in Preah Sihanouk, Sihanoukville
Speaking of my travels as mr.hotsia in Cambodia, Sihanoukville, formerly known as Kampong Som, is a city I always stop by. This place has many charms—not only beautiful clear seas but also truly delicious local food. Today, I will take you to explore local street food in Preah Sihanouk city to see the real lifestyle of the locals here.
The Charm of Traveling from Thailand to Sihanoukville
My journey to Sihanoukville started from Trat Province. For those interested in this route, I recommend readingTraveling from Trat to SihanoukvilleMy trip began at Ban Hat Lek checkpoint in Khlong Yai District, Trat Province. Crossing into Cambodia, it’s very convenient to take a bus to Sihanoukville. The air-conditioned bus by Cherdchai Tour made the trip comfortable, taking about half a day to arrive.
Local Market Life and Traditional Food in Sihanoukville
I stayed in downtown Sihanoukville near the night market and morning market. This area made me feel like stepping back in time to witness real local life, especially the fresh market with a variety of fresh produce, fruits, and seafood sold by locals from early morning.
In the morning, I enjoyed strolling through Sihanoukville’s market and stopping to eat grilled pork rice at small shops popular with locals. The grilled pork rice here features fragrant grilled pork served with crispy fried duck egg, a familiar breakfast dish in southern Vietnam and southern Cambodia. I once had food poisoning from grilled pork in Vietnam because it was left out too long, so I recommend eating it hot off the grill only.
For dinner, my favorite dishes were Sihanoukville noodles and grilled stingray, which are easy to find in this area. There are also grilled pork leg and many other local dishes waiting for you to taste the authentic flavors directly from the vendors.
The Specialty of Selling Food in a Coastal Town
Another interesting aspect I want to highlight is the selling style here. It’s common to see vendors carrying goods on their heads, selling fresh food and fruits along the beach and in town. The items are placed on a krama cloth, creating a charming image that truly reflects local life. I think this is a rare sight nowadays.
Restaurants and Chicken Rice Porridge in Sihanoukville
If you stay in downtown Sihanoukville like me, the accommodation I chose wasSihanouk Timeshare Hotelwhich is not far from the markets and beach. It’s easy to find food whenever you feel hungry. The chicken rice porridge shop near the hotel is a night market stall open until late, always busy with locals. Their chicken rice porridge is lightly flavored but fragrant with spices and well-simmered broth. It’s a simple dish that replenished my energy after a day of exploring markets and beaches.
Sihanoukville Must-Try Foods
Besides the foods mentioned, you will find plenty of fresh seafood here. If you like grilled meat or grilled shrimp, don’t miss trying the seaside restaurants that offer many options. There is also FoodPanda delivery service in town for those who want to try various dishes without walking far or waiting in line. I’ve tried ordering and found it quite convenient.
