Ordering Made-to-Order Food in Front of the Market at Srinoomville, Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk City or Kampong Som (Preah Sihanouk)
When talking about Sihanoukville, or as many still know by its old name Kampong Som, the coastal city by the Gulf of Thailand in Cambodia, besides the beautiful sea and quiet beaches, what I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy is exploring the fresh market and eating made-to-order street food in front of the market in the Srinoomville area.
I traveled to this city via the Ban Hat Lek checkpoint in Trat Province, which is very convenient for Thai people wanting to escape the hustle of big cities and relax by the sea. Before reaching Sihanoukville, I stayed one night in Trat city to prepare for the journey to this coastal city. (Read travel details atTraveling from Trat to Sihanoukville)
The next morning after checking into a hotel in downtown Sihanoukville, I decided to walk to the central fresh market, locally called “Srinoomville Market.” This is an indoor market selling a variety of fresh goods, from fruits and vegetables to fresh meat and seafood freshly caught from Cambodian waters. I really like the atmosphere here because it clearly preserves the simplicity of the Sihanoukville community.
Along the street in front of the market, there are many small made-to-order food stalls lined up. mr.hotsia didn’t hesitate to try authentic local dishes that may look simple but have extraordinary flavors.
Made-to-Order Food by Srinoomville Market: Simple Yet Delicious Enough to Make You Stop Eating
My favorite dish was grilled pork over rice topped with a special sauce that is sour, sweet, salty, and spicy all at once. The grilled pork is cut into bite-sized pieces, grilled just right to keep the meat juicy, with a little fat. Eating it with hot steamed rice and crispy fried duck egg on the side was absolutely delightful.
What’s interesting is the way the vendors sell their food here—they carry trays of food on their heads, using a traditional checkered cloth to prevent slipping, walking around to sell to customers. This is a unique characteristic of this place. mr.hotsia has never seen this head-carrying method anywhere else in Southeast Asia. It reflects the local lifestyle that strongly preserves traditional culture.
Besides grilled pork over rice, I also ordered made-to-order noodles at a stall by the market. The clear, flavorful broth, tender pork slices, and fresh vegetables on the table made every bite refreshing. There is also a local specialty grilled stingray dish. However, I recommend eating the food while it’s hot because if left too long, flies may come, as I experienced once in southern Vietnam.
Srinoomville Market and the Morning Lifestyle of Sihanoukville People
This market is not just a place to buy fresh goods but also a spot where I saw the charming morning life of the locals. Schoolchildren walk to school accompanied by teachers waiting at the nearby school entrance. The atmosphere is filled with warmth and the simplicity of a coastal town.
I strolled through the market in the morning and saw vendors carrying fresh fruits on their heads, including oranges, bananas, and mangoes, all looking fresh and delicious. Although this city doesn’t have as many tourists as Pattaya in Thailand, the lively market made me feel like I truly experienced the authentic coastal Cambodia. (Read more aboutSihanoukville Market)
Convenience of Staying and Eating in Sihanoukville City
For those planning to visit Sihanoukville, I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying in the city center because it’s close to the market and made-to-order food stalls, and you can easily get to the beach by tuk-tuk or within a 10-minute walk. The hotel I stayed at recently is Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel, located on the second beach road. The price is reasonable, and there is free WIFI.
If you want to fully enjoy local food, I suggest waking up early to walk the market and order made-to-order food in front of the market like a true local. You will experience the friendliness and authentic flavors of Sihanoukville. (Read hotel reviews atHotels and Accommodations in Sihanoukville)
