Preah Sihanouk Noodles: A Local Flavor Not to Miss in Sihanoukville
When mr.hotsia arrived in Sihanoukville, locally called "Kampong Som," Cambodia’s top seaside city, one thing I was determined to try was the local cuisine here, especially “Preah Sihanouk Noodles,” a dish beloved by locals and a distinctive Khmer specialty in this area.
Before tasting the delicious noodles, I must say that traveling to Sihanoukville is very convenient. If you start from Trat Province, Thailand, you can cross through the Ban Hat Lek checkpoint in Khlong Yai District, a permanent border crossing that allows easy access for Thai and international tourists into Cambodia.Read about traveling from Trat to Sihanoukvillewhich I have described in detail before
Sihanoukville is a city where I felt peacefulness and less hustle compared to other beach tourist towns I have visited. It has clean beaches and not too crowded with tourists. The sky and sea here feel refreshing and invite you to dive into the coolness of the Khmer sea eagerly.Read the full Sihanoukville travel guidethat I have written before
Preah Sihanouk Noodles: A Unique Flavor
After strolling through the morning market and experiencing the lifestyle of Sihanoukville locals atSihanoukville Marketan indoor fresh market with a variety of fresh foods, I found a famous noodle shop recommended by locals to try.
Preah Sihanouk noodles here are unlike ordinary Thai noodles. The taste is slightly salty with a fragrant aroma of spices and a rich broth made by simmering pork bones and local spices. The noodles are cooked just right—chewy and soft, neither mushy nor too hard. The broth has a natural sweetness from stingray bones, which I ordered as an extra in my bowl.
The toppings include grilled pork and minced pork, seasoned with authentic Khmer spices that offer a slightly sweet and sour flavor from tamarind juice and moderately spicy chili powder. This noodle bowl became a breakfast that impressed mr.hotsia greatly, perfect for those wanting to taste something different from typical Thai noodles.
I recommend eating it hot with fresh vegetables provided by the shop, such as bean sprouts, coriander, and basil leaves, which enhance the aroma and flavor distinctly.
Lifestyle and Food Colors by Sihanoukville Beach
Besides Preah Sihanouk noodles, Sihanoukville offers many other dishes that mr.hotsia doesn’t want you to miss, such as uniquely flavored grilled stingray and crispy yet tender fried pork knuckles. I also saw vendors carrying baskets on their heads selling fruits and snacks along the beach, a rare sight in Thailand.
Spending several days in Sihanoukville gave me the chance to wake up early, visit fresh markets, and enjoy grilled pork rice, a typical southern Khmer breakfast. I really liked the simplicity of the food and the atmosphere here. Importantly, there are still few Thai tourists disturbing this original vibe.Read about food and restaurants in Sihanoukvilleto prepare your appetite before traveling
Accommodation and Living in the Seaside City of Sihanoukville
For accommodation, mr.hotsia chose to stay in downtown Sihanoukville, within a 10-minute walk to the beach and close to markets with a full range of food. I stayed at Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel, which is not beachfront but offers a quiet atmosphere and affordable prices, suitable for travelers not seeking luxury. Although occasional power outages occur, which is normal here, I consider it part of Sihanoukville’s charm.Read hotel and accommodation recommendations in Sihanoukvilleto choose the right place for you
Here you can live slowly, stroll along the beach, watch sunsets, or take a tuk-tuk to various beautiful beaches easily. I had the chance to visit Koh Pu and nearby beaches with crystal-clear water and very peaceful atmosphere.See information about Koh Pu, Sihanoukvilleright away
