Coffee sipping in the heart of Sihanoukville, Cambodia
When talking about Sihanoukville, also known as Preah Sihanouk or Kampong Som, a slowly growing coastal city in Cambodia, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the local lifestyle up close. One of my favorite morning activities is sipping coffee amidst a city atmosphere that is not too hectic.
My journey started from Thailand, crossing the Ban Hat Lek checkpoint in Trat province, a permanent border crossing convenient for Thais to enter Cambodia.Read more about traveling from Trat to SihanoukvilleI took an air-conditioned bus from Bangkok to Trat, then continued by bus to Sihanoukville. Although it took quite some time, the journey allowed me to see the contrasting lifestyles on both sides of the border.
City atmosphere and coffee sipping
Sihanoukville city is not very large but full of simple and warm life. I stayed in the city center, near the night market and fresh market, which are gathering points for locals.Sihanoukville MarketThis is where I took a morning stroll before going for coffee. The coffee shops here are not fancy cafes like in Bangkok but small shops popular among locals for chatting. The sound of freshly ground coffee beans and the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee awaken the senses.
I chose to sit at an old wooden table outside the shop, watching the narrow street bustling with pedestrians and tuk-tuks passing by. Some are locals, others foreign tourists visiting. Sihanoukville’s charm lies in its unspoiled naturalness. Coffee sipping here is a slow life experience I can’t find in big cities.
Coffee and breakfast of Sihanoukville locals
The coffee here is strong, available as black coffee or coffee with sweetened condensed milk, a popular Southeast Asian style. I, mr.hotsia, ordered a hot black coffee paired with bread or mango sticky rice easily found at roadside stalls. It’s a small happiness no visitor should miss.
Besides coffee, the local breakfast is distinctive, especially grilled pork rice which I tried at a fresh market near the coffee shop. The grilled pork has a smoky charcoal aroma, topped with crispy fried duck egg and a special sauce. This dish perfectly blends influences from southern Vietnam and southern Cambodia.Read about food and restaurants in SihanoukvilleHere it is
Lifestyle at the market and roadside
After coffee and breakfast, I, mr.hotsia, walked around the fresh and dry markets in Sihanoukville. These markets are community hubs for buying fresh food, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and various goods. Interestingly, many female vendors carry goods on their heads while walking along the streets, a sight not often seen in Thailand. This makes the coastal city atmosphere lively and charming.
In the morning, you can see schoolchildren walking to school accompanied by teachers waiting to pick them up. This scene reflects the simplicity and warmth of this community. I wandered around observing local life and also saw fresh seafood being prepared for sale at the market.
Relaxing and continuing to explore Sihanoukville
If you plan to visit here, I recommend staying several nights to fully absorb the atmosphere and live like a local.Accommodation in SihanoukvilleOptions range from city lodgings within walking distance to the beach to beachfront accommodations where you can step directly into the water.
