Cambodian Sea in Sihanoukville: A Unique Freshness by mr.hotsia

When talking about the seaside I, mr.hotsia, have personally experienced in Cambodia, “Sihanoukville,” or its full name Preah Sihanouk Province, is the answer I want to share in detail. This place is not just an ordinary sea but a Cambodian sea with a unique charm that you won't easily find anywhere else.

The journey I chose from Trat to Sihanoukville

Before reaching Sihanoukville, I started my trip from Bangkok by taking an air-conditioned bus from Cherdchai Tour Company from Bangna to Trat Province, which took about 4 hours. Then I stayed overnight in Trat town to prepare for crossing the border at Ban Hat Lek checkpoint, Khlong Yai District, Trat Province. This is a permanent checkpoint convenient for both Thai and foreigners who want to enter Cambodia. Opposite the checkpoint is Koh Kong Province, locally called “Koh Kong.”

From Trat to Sihanoukville, I bought a ticket directly from my accommodation in Trat town for about 600 baht. One ticket covers the entire trip to Sihanoukville. It is very convenient and cost-effective for those who want uncomplicated travel.Read detailed travel information from Trat to Sihanoukvillein the article I wrote earlier

Sihanoukville: A Seaside Town That Remains Pure

Upon arriving in Sihanoukville, the first thing I felt was the calmness and lack of hustle and bustle in this town, clearly different from popular beaches in Thailand. Sihanoukville is a seaside town where tourists are not overwhelming. The sea water is clear and clean. Although the sand is not as white as Koh Samet, the sea here is impressively clear and natural.

The beach is full of colors from local vendors carrying goods on their heads, selling items you rarely see elsewhere. This scene tells the story of the local lifestyle that still preserves traditional ways. I really enjoyed seeing these things at every step along the beach.

Accommodation in Sihanoukville: How to Choose to Suit Your Taste

For this trip, I chose Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel located on the second beach road. It’s not directly on the sea but within easy walking distance to the beach. This hotel is suitable for those who want to relax in a simple atmosphere at a reasonable price. However, a caution is that electricity in this town is unstable and power outages happen frequently, especially at night. I recommend if you want real comfort, choose a large hotel with a backup generator to avoid sudden blackouts.

Another interesting option is the beachfront accommodation zone, which offers more restaurants and a more relaxed atmosphere. Prices are not much different, starting from about 300 baht upwards. A tuk-tuk ride from the town center is not far, suitable for those who want to wake up to the sound of the sea directly.

Fresh Market and Lifestyle in Sihanoukville

One of the things I really liked in Sihanoukville was walking around the fresh market in this town, which clearly reflects the local lifestyle. I stayed near the night market in the town center. Early in the morning, you will find a fresh market with a variety of fresh food, vegetables, fruits, clothes, and daily necessities. The market is next to a school where children go to school and teachers stand orderly to welcome them, which is very heartwarming.

I still remember walking in the morning market and seeing children helping to pick up trash by the roadside. It felt like going back to my childhood when I did similar activities at school. Moreover, the market is quiet without the crowd of tourists like other places, perfect for those who want to experience the genuine kindness of real Cambodians.Read about Sihanoukville Marketto get more images and atmosphere.

Authentic Cambodian Food in Sihanoukville: What Did I Eat?

Food here is another highlight I highly recommend. My favorite breakfast was “grilled pork rice,” featuring fragrant grilled pork served with crispy fried duck egg. This dish is popular in southern Vietnam and southern Cambodia as well. It has a rich and delicious flavor.

For other meals, I chose chicken rice porridge at the night market in front of the hotel, as well as stir-fried noodles and grilled stingray, fresh seafood caught directly from the Cambodian sea. Additionally, what impressed me most was seeing vendors carrying goods on their heads, selling food and fruits. This is a scene I have never seen anywhere else and is a unique color of this town.

Summary of Experience from the Cambodian Sea in Sihanoukville

For me, mr.hotsia, Sihanoukville is a seaside town that truly balances nature and local lifestyle. Here, there is no chaos, no excessive lights and sounds, but full of warmth from the people and beautiful sea. Travel is convenient through Ban Hat Lek checkpoint from Trat, and there is a fresh market that tells the real lifestyle of Cambodians, including delicious and easy-to-find food.

If you are looking for a sea destination not yet spoiled by mass tourism, give Sihanoukville a chance to experience the peace and true flavor of the Cambodian sea.
