Pickled Mud Crab and Salted Crab from Cambodia, Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk or Kampong Som (Preah Sihanouk)
When talking about Sihanoukville, or what many may know as Kampong Som, Cambodia's top seaside city, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the atmosphere and fresh seafood flavors here. I must say, "You have to come." Especially the pickled mud crab and salted crab dishes that are unique to this city. I will share my real experience, diving into the lifestyle, sunlight, and sea breeze here.
Travel Route from Thailand to Sihanoukville – Gateway to the Cambodian Sea
Before talking about delicious food, let me introduce the route I personally took from Trat Province to Sihanoukville. My journey started at the Ban Hat Lek border checkpoint, Khlong Yai District, Trat Province, a permanent checkpoint that Thais and foreigners use conveniently to cross into Cambodia. Opposite is Koh Kong Province, or what Cambodians call "Khet Koh Kong." From here, you can easily continue by car to Sihanoukville within 3-4 hours (read the full travel details atTraveling from Trat to Sihanoukville)
I enjoyed the simplicity of this trip. Most importantly, I got to see the natural scenery and the lifestyle of villagers on both sides of the border. What excited me the most was visiting Sihanoukville, which, although not frequented by many Thai tourists, has a charm unlike any other seaside city I've been to.
Sihanoukville Fresh Market – Meeting Point and Source of Fresh Seafood from the Cambodian Sea
Upon arriving in Sihanoukville, the first thing I, mr.hotsia, had to do was visit the city's fresh market. This market is not a tourist market but the real center of local life. I stayed near the night market in town and walked early in the morning to the covered fresh market. The market is quite clean and orderly, offering a wide variety of fresh goods from vegetables and fruits to seafood freshly caught that morning.
I saw Cambodian female vendors selling fresh goods balanced on their heads in a style I've never seen elsewhere. They use a traditional checkered cloth to hold items on their heads, walking along the beach or streets. It's a unique and charming sight. Pickled Mud Crab and Salted Crab – The King of Sihanoukville Seafood
The pickled mud crab and salted crab here are unlike anywhere else. The flavor is rich and balanced with traditional Cambodian taste. The pickled crab uses fresh small mud crabs caught from the sea mixed with a special Cambodian seasoning. It has a sour, salty, and slightly sweet taste with a crunchy texture all around the mouth. I tried it with hot steamed rice or dipped in spicy seafood sauce, which was a perfect combination.
The salted crab is preserved by salting until it develops a strong flavor and a distinctive aroma. It's perfect for those who enjoy bold and unique tastes. I, mr.hotsia, tried it at a local restaurant in the fresh market and was so impressed that I bought more to take back to my accommodation.
If anyone wants to be impressed by the seafood here, I recommend visiting the fresh market or local restaurants atFood and Restaurants in Sihanoukvillebecause they offer a wide variety of very fresh dishes. Besides crab, there are grilled stingrays, pork knuckles, and Cambodian-style noodles that I tried and liked just as much.
Lifestyle and Unique Atmosphere of the Seaside City
Although Sihanoukville is a seaside city, it is not as crowded as typical tourist cities. I stayed at Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel, which is not far from the beach (read accommodation reviews atHotels and Accommodation in Sihanoukville). The atmosphere here is peaceful and friendly. There might be occasional power outages typical of Cambodian seaside towns, but that adds to the charm, making you feel like you are truly experiencing local life.
In the morning, I often saw schoolchildren walking to school accompanied by teachers welcoming them. It was a very touching sight. Some children even helped pick up trash along the road, reflecting the discipline and responsibility of Sihanoukville residents, something rarely seen in big cities.
Another highlight I liked was female vendors walking along the beach selling fruits and snacks balanced on their heads. This image blends the old and simple Cambodian culture, making Sihanoukville's beaches colorful and uniquely atmospheric. (You can read more about the beaches atBeaches of Sihanoukville)
