Grilled Catfish Salad in Sihanoukville, a coastal city that preserves the traditional charm of Cambodia

When talking about Sihanoukville (Preah Sihanouk), Cambodia's number one seaside city, many people probably think of beautiful seas, clear waters, and beaches that are not as crowded as major tourist cities. But for me, mr.hotsia, what makes Sihanoukville more charming than just the sea is the "local food" full of unique flavors and culture, especially the signature dish "Grilled Catfish Salad" that I recently tasted at the fresh market in the city during my last visit.

My journey this time started from Trat Province, Thailand. Anyone interested can read the travel details in my article.Traveling from Trat to Sihanoukvillewhich I have described in detail. Crossing the border via Ban Hat Lek checkpoint to Sihanoukville city is very convenient, taking about 4 hours from Bangkok to Sihanoukville city, which is worth it to experience the lifestyle and local food of southern Cambodia.

Sihanoukville Fresh Market and the Atmosphere of Local Food

After unpacking at my accommodation in the city center, I chose to stay at Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel, which is not far from the fresh market and the beach. This place is perfect for those who want to experience both the city and the sea atmosphere at the same time, especially strolling through the fresh market which I really like because this market is full of fresh produce and local foods that are hard to find in Thailand.

Sihanoukville Market is an indoor market that combines fresh and dry goods, including vegetables, fruits, and fresh seafood just caught from the nearby sea. I enjoyed watching vendors balancing goods on their heads, selling food and fruits along crowded streets, reflecting the true lifestyle of Khmer people. This is where I found the must-try dish I mentioned earlier: "Grilled Catfish Salad."

Grilled Catfish Salad: A Spicy Flavor from Cambodia's Coast

The grilled catfish salad I found in this fresh market is unlike any other catfish salad I've had before. The catfish meat is grilled until fragrant, with a rich flavor from the perfect grilling—not too dry and still juicy. When mixed with the salad ingredients including fresh bird's eye chili, sliced shallots, fresh lime juice, and authentic Khmer fish sauce that is not sweet like ours, this dish achieves a perfect balance of sour, spicy, and salty flavors.

As a food traveler, mr.hotsia, I emphasize that this grilled catfish salad must be eaten right after grilling to get the best taste. Sometimes I see vendors balancing goods on their heads selling plates of grilled catfish salad along with carefully selected fresh fruits—a scene I believe many Thai tourists have never seen before in their lives.

Local Life and Food in Sihanoukville

If you want to experience this atmosphere, I recommend walking around Sihanoukville market in the morning to see locals buying food and cooking, warm and simple like everyday village life. I have written in an articleSihanoukville Marketthat this place has a very charming lifestyle. Children go to school, and teachers play an important role in community care. It’s a very heartwarming scene.

The breakfast I encountered was also special, such as grilled pork rice, a popular dish here, eaten with hot fried duck eggs, so delicious that I had to go back for seconds. If you want to try fresh seafood, try grilled stingray or Sihanoukville noodles with authentic local flavors, which I have described inFood and Restaurants in Sihanoukville

Concluding with an overview of Sihanoukville, a beach city waiting to be discovered

Sihanoukville is not only about the sea but also offers a diversity of culture and local food waiting for travelers like me, mr.hotsia, and you to experience. Importantly, this city still maintains peace and naturalness, unlike other beach tourist cities that are often crowded and full of tourists.

If anyone is interested in visiting Cambodia’s seaside and wants to try local dishes like grilled catfish salad or stroll through Sihanoukville fresh market, I recommend planning to stay here for two or three nights to enjoy a slow life, relax by the sea, and truly experience the lifestyle of southern Khmer people.
