Khmer Grilled Beef at Kampong Som Buffet, Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk City

If you've heard of Sihanoukville or Kampong Som, you probably think of the clear Cambodian sea and the chill atmosphere of this seaside town. But for me, mr.hotsia, one of the most impressive things on my latest trip here was the “Khmer grilled beef” at a full local buffet, something not easily found elsewhere in Cambodia.

Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s top seaside city, is not very well known among Thai tourists, even though it’s just across the Ban Hat Lek border in Trat Province. I myself traveled this route thoroughly. You can read details about traveling from Trat to Sihanoukville atTraveling from Trat to Sihanoukvillewhich I have written about.

This time I stayed in downtown Sihanoukville. The hotel I chose was Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel, which is close to the beach and conveniently located near the fresh market and various restaurants. I recommend choosing accommodation in the city center to experience the local lifestyle more clearly. Khmer Grilled Beef Buffet at Kampong Som

Khmer grilled beef is one of the signature dishes that impressed me greatly in Sihanoukville. There is a buffet restaurant focusing on freshly grilled beef served with unique side dishes and dipping sauces in a homely atmosphere full of warmth, like dining with friends in the same community.

The beef used is cut into bite-sized pieces, not too thin. When grilled over charcoal, the aroma of the charcoal and beef blend perfectly. The fragrant grilled beef scent is irresistible. I, mr.hotsia, must admit that eating this grilled beef with hot sticky rice and fresh vegetables provided is truly a heaven for meat lovers.

The dipping sauce is an authentic Khmer recipe with a spicy, sour, sweet, and just right salty taste. I tried dipping a piece of beef and felt the refreshing sourness of lime and a unique herbal aroma, making me want to take another piece and another without stopping.

Lifestyle and Atmosphere at Sihanoukville Market

After enjoying the grilled beef, I took a walk to the fresh market in Sihanoukville. This market is one of my favorite spots because it shows the real daily life of the locals. The fresh market here not only offers fresh seafood but also meat, fruits, vegetables, and seasonings used in southern Khmer households.

The Sihanoukville market is not far from my accommodation, just a few minutes’ walk. Schoolchildren pass by in neat uniforms, and teachers and parents wait to pick them up. The atmosphere is peaceful and warm. I have written about this market’s atmosphere inSihanoukville Marketwhich readers can check out for more details and photos.

Other Interesting Khmer Foods in Sihanoukville

Besides grilled beef, Sihanoukville offers many other dishes I, mr.hotsia, have tried and liked, such as grilled pork rice influenced by southern Vietnam, featuring large grilled pork pieces served with hot fried duck egg, a popular breakfast among locals. There’s also Sihanoukville noodles with a rich broth and freshly grilled spicy stingray.

When eating here, be cautious about freshness. I once encountered a place where pre-grilled pork had flies on it, which caused me to have food poisoning. So if you want to try, I recommend eating it hot off the grill immediately.

Another colorful aspect I really like is seeing vendors carrying trays on their heads selling fruits and food along the beach and in the town, a charming scene quite different from anywhere in Thailand or Vietnam.
