Night Atmosphere in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

When talking about a seaside city not yet widely known to Thai tourists but full of charm and a fresh, unique vibe, Sihanoukville, or Kampong Som in Khmer, is one city I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend you experience yourself. On my trip here, the nightlife of Sihanoukville offered much more to discover and capture than I had expected.

I started my journey from Trat Province in Thailand, crossing the Ban Hat Lek border checkpoint into Cambodia by air-conditioned bus from Cherdchai Tour. I took a bus from Bangkok to Trat, stayed one night, then continued directly to Sihanoukville, which was very convenient. For those interested, details of the routecan be read here.

The First Night in Sihanoukville with a Different Feeling

I stayed at Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel, located not far from the beach in the second beachfront road zone. The nighttime atmosphere here is much quieter than typical seaside towns. Power outages occur intermittently, so some nights you need a flashlight or use your phone light. This is the reality of Sihanoukville that travelers should be prepared for, as the electrical system is still unstable. However, it does not reduce the fun of walking around at all.

There are no beer bars or nightclubs like in Pattaya, but local food and dessert shops stay open late. Street vendors carrying goods on their heads selling snacks and fruits along the road is a sight I saw for the first time, giving a real sense of the local lifestyle that still preserves its traditional culture well.Local FoodThis is another charm that makes me want to return again.

Night Market with Fresh Produce and Must-Try Foods

One place I always visit whenever I come to this city isSihanoukville Marketwhich has both fresh and dry market zones side by side. At night, the fresh market quiets down but food stalls become livelier. The chicken rice porridge stall I like is in front of my hotel, open from evening until late. Stir-fried noodles and other Khmer dishes are also available to order.

I remember that dinner I chose to eat Khmer grilled meat at a small buffet in the night market zone. The meat was fragrant with spices and had just the right rich flavor. For those interested in seeing the full night market atmosphere, I have a video clipNight Atmosphere in Sihanoukvillefilmed on location for you to watch.

Strolling Along the Beach at Night

After a satisfying local meal, I enjoyed walking along Sihanoukville’s clean and very peaceful beach at night. The beach is not crowded like others, the sea water is clear, and the sea breeze is cool. The gentle sound of waves made me feel relaxed and gave me time to reflect while walking.

For those who want to fully relax by the beach, check out the beachfront accommodations with many restaurants and lodging options at reasonable prices. I have previously recommendedHotels and Accommodations in Sihanoukvillethat are interesting and can be booked in advance for convenience.

Local Lifestyle and People I Experienced

One thing that impressed me greatly was the simplicity and friendliness of the people here. Although it is a developing seaside tourist city, traditional lifestyles are still clearly visible—from street vendors carrying goods on their heads to children walking to school in the morning. I have written about the market and morning life inSihanoukville Market Articlewhich should help give a clearer picture.

Also, a popular breakfast here is grilled pork rice topped with a fried duck egg, a dish I tried many times and really enjoyed. The fresh aroma and taste of grilled pork made starting my day here full of energy and happiness.

Summary of Feelings from mr.hotsia

Sihanoukville feels like I have discovered a hidden gem in Cambodia. The night atmosphere here is not just quiet darkness but full of life and warmth from people who still preserve their unique identity well. It’s no surprise why this city is Cambodia’s top seaside destination, even though it is still little known among Thai tourists.

If anyone wants to change the atmosphere from familiar beaches, try experiencing Sihanoukville at night once. I guarantee you will have memorable images and experiences unlike anywhere else.
