Accommodation recommendations in Sihanoukville, a seaside city you must experience yourself
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Sihanoukville, also known by its former name many might recognize as “Kampong Som,” Cambodia’s top seaside tourist city. Here, the sea is clear and clean, with long beaches stretching along the gentle breeze. But what I truly want to share from the heart is about accommodation, which is the key to a fun and comfortable trip.
For this trip, I chose the route from Thailand, crossing at Ban Hat Lek checkpoint in Trat Province, which I have already shared my experience about.Traveling from Trat to Sihanoukville is very convenient. Shared vans and air-conditioned buses run all day. Upon arriving in Sihanoukville, the first thing I did was find accommodation that suits a traveler like me who wants to stroll the markets, taste local food, and relax by the sea in a comfortable atmosphere.
Two accommodation zones in Sihanoukville recommended by mr.hotsia
Sihanoukville mainly has two accommodation zones. The first is in the city center, which is not directly on the beach but only about a 10-minute walk to the shore. If you don’t want to walk, you can easily take a tuk-tuk. This zone has the advantage of being close to the fresh market and night market, with many local restaurants and street food options. I stayed atSihanoukville Timeshare Hotelwhich is in this zone. Hotel prices start at about 15 USD per night (paying in USD is more cost-effective). Rooms have air conditioning and Wi-Fi, perfect for those who want to truly experience local life.
The other zone is beachfront accommodation, lined with restaurants along the seaside road. The atmosphere is quiet and ideal for those who like waking up to the sound of the waves. Prices here are not much higher than in the city, starting at around 300 THB per night, which is very good value considering the view and tranquility.
Important tips for choosing accommodation from mr.hotsia
Sihanoukville has some minor electrical system limitations. Power outages often occur intermittently, especially from afternoon to night, which I experienced several times on this trip. Some small hotels do not have backup generators. So, to avoid disruptions, I recommend choosing accommodation with a generator or a larger hotel, like where I stayed,Sihanouk Timeshare Hotelwhich, although experiencing some outages, still has partial power backup systems.
Surrounding atmosphere and local lifestyle near the accommodation
Staying in the city center allowed me to be close to the fresh market,Sihanoukville Marketan indoor market with a full range of fresh and dried goods. I enjoyed observing the local way of life here—from schoolchildren walking to school in the morning, teachers greeting them, to vendors carrying goods on their heads selling along the streets. It’s a scene I’ve never seen anywhere else. Additionally, I tried a typical Sihanoukville breakfast at the market, such as grilled pork rice topped with a fragrant fried duck egg, which I have described in my article about Sihanoukville food.which I have shared in my article about Sihanoukville cuisine. It was an experience that truly enriched the feeling of traveling.
Tips for booking accommodation and getting around the city
If you plan to visit Sihanoukville like me, I recommend booking accommodation in advance through reliable websites or local agents, as good places fill up quickly, especially during festivals or long holidays. Getting around the city is not complicated; tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis are available all day at affordable prices. Walking from city accommodation to the market or beach is comfortable, or you can easily call a tuk-tuk.
mr.hotsia’s summary of impressions about accommodation in Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is a uniquely charming city with beautiful seas, less crowded attractions compared to Thai beaches, and affordable accommodation. It’s perfect for travelers who enjoy deep exploration and want to experience authentic local life. Importantly, the city still has relatively few Thai tourists. I, mr.hotsia, would like to recommend friends to try visiting like this once, and you will discover many great sides of Cambodia waiting for us.
