Street Food Sihanoukville: Authentic Khmer Flavors in Preah Sihanouk
Sihanoukville, also called “Kampong Som” by the Khmer people, is a seaside city that I, mr.hotsia, have visited many times. As Cambodia’s top beach resort city, it offers more than just beautiful seas, clear waters, and clean beaches. The charm that I fall in love with every time I visit is the “Street Food,” filled with authentic Khmer flavors and local lifestyle.
When traveling to Sihanoukville, I usually start from my hometown in Trat Province, passing through Hat Lek checkpoint, which is a very convenient permanent border crossing (read moreTraveling from Trat to Sihanoukville) I usually take a bus from Cherdchai Tour Company from Bangkok to Trat, which takes about 4 hours, then continue by bus to Sihanoukville for a few more hours to easily reach this city.
Evening Walk and Eating at Markets and Streets
If you want to truly experience the Street Food atmosphere, I recommend strolling in the evening at the fresh markets and night markets in downtown Sihanoukville. Here you can find fresh seafood as well as a variety of cooked dishes to choose from without worrying about only dry snacks like elsewhere. This market is not far from my hotel in the city center, just a comfortable 10-minute walk.
Walking past stalls selling hot stir-fried noodles freshly cooked over high heat, the aroma drifts from afar. I ordered chicken rice porridge, a simple dish popular among locals in Sihanoukville. This shop is open day and night, featuring tender chicken and a mildly seasoned broth at a very cheap price. I enjoy watching the lively Khmer conversations between the vendor and customers, feeling like part of the community.
Grilled Pork and Fried Duck Egg: Vietnamese-Khmer Style Breakfast
Another breakfast I really like is “Grilled Pork Rice” topped with a fried duck egg. This is a popular dish in southern Vietnam and southern Cambodia. I once had a bad experience in Vietnam with old food, but in Sihanoukville, they grill fresh pork hot off the grill, guaranteeing safety and great taste.
Street vendors selling grilled pork like this are mostly found at morning markets and small streets near accommodations. I often see women carrying trays of grilled pork on their heads, walking through alleys—a charming and unique sight of this city.
Grilled Stingray and Fresh Seafood from Sihanoukville Bay
Besides simple dishes, fresh seafood is something I never miss when visiting Sihanoukville. The grilled stingray here tastes sweet and fragrant from marinated spices and charcoal grilling. The smoky aroma mixed with the sweetness of the fish meat is something I always miss when away from home.
If you want to fully enjoy seafood, I recommend walking along the beach to the seaside restaurant area, where most places offer a wide variety of fresh menus (read moreBeaches of Sihanoukville)
Lifestyle and Colors of Sihanoukville Street Food
What makes Street Food in Sihanoukville charming is not just the taste but the “lifestyle” of the people here. I once woke up early to walk to the fresh market.Sihanoukville MarketNear schools, children walk to school accompanied by teachers warmly welcoming them. Some pick up trash along the streets. This scene reminds me of the simplicity and orderliness of life here.
Most vendors do not have permanent stalls but carry their goods on trays on their heads, walking along the streets. I have never seen this anywhere else. It’s a cute image reflecting the patience and hard work of Sihanoukville people very well.
Summary and Travel Tips
If you love trying new foods and want to truly experience local culture, Sihanoukville is the answer I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend. Eating Street Food here is unlike anywhere else in Cambodia or even Thailand. Because Thai tourists are still few, you can enjoy a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere.
For accommodation in this city, I recommend staying in the city center near markets and main streets for easy access to food and travel to the beach. Or if you prefer quiet, choose a seaside hotel (see more accommodation info atHotels and Accommodation in Sihanoukville)
