Backpacking Southern Cambodia 11/41: Cambodian Fried Chicken Rice

Every time I, mr.hotsia, travel into Southern Cambodia, I make it a point to seek out local dishes with unique charm. This time, “Cambodian Fried Chicken Rice” became one of the must-visit spots.

The fried chicken rice shop I found is not far from the historic Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, a former prison of the Khmer Rouge. The surrounding atmosphere is filled with Cambodia’s old memories, but the aroma of fried chicken and hot steamed rice makes you momentarily forget the sad history.

The fried chicken here is different from many places in Cambodia. It’s not just crispy or flavorful, but the use of Khmer spices with a distinctive aroma and perfect frying keeps the chicken juicy, not dry. The fried chicken pieces are served on hot steamed rice, topped with a special sauce that balances sweet and sour flavors, complemented by cucumber and fresh vegetables, making this meal a fulfilling travel experience.

The highlight of this shop is not only the food’s taste but also the atmosphere of the small market around, bustling with locals shopping and chatting. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking through these markets because I get to see the real lifestyle of Southern Cambodians and have chances to practice a little Khmer language throughout my journey.

Traveling here is convenient from nearby provinces such asTakeo Provincewhere I have stayed before. The bus from Phnom Penh takes about 2-3 hours, passing scenic views of the Mekong River and peaceful, natural countryside. Takeo Province also has interesting local markets and eateries, includingGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Provinceor traditional morning market atmospheres likeStung Treng Morning Marketwhich I have documented previously.

For those interested in fresh seafood from Southern Cambodia, Kampot Province is another option I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend. Besides fresh seafood, local dishes like dry Cambodian noodles are not to be missed, as seen inSeafood at Kampot Morning Market, Kampot ProvinceorFresh Oyster Seafood Market, Kampot Provincewhich I have also visited.

Back to Cambodian Fried Chicken Rice, although this shop is not widely known online, the taste and atmosphere I, mr.hotsia, experienced are beyond description. A simple single-dish meal that tells the story of Southern Cambodian culture and lifestyle through its careful preparation and enjoyment.

I recommend friends interested in following my journey to open their hearts and step into these small shops. Not only will you satisfy your hunger, but you will also feel the simplicity and warmth of the local people.

For my next trip, I, mr.hotsia, will remain in Southern Cambodia. Get ready for new and extraordinary stories and flavors.
