Fresh oysters from the sea at Kampot Market, Kampot Province, Cambodia

When talking about Kampot Province in Cambodia, many might think of the peaceful riverside town with a relaxed atmosphere. For me, mr.hotsia, I must say it is one of the destinations food travelers should not miss: the “Fresh Oyster Market.” This place is a paradise for lovers of fresh seafood that still preserves the traditional lifestyle of the locals in an interesting way.

The first time I arrived in Kampot, this spot was not a main stop like Takaew Province, which I have shared in another article.Travel in Takaew ProvinceBut Kampot has its own unique charm that made me stop and explore this riverside fresh market thoroughly.

Atmosphere of the Fresh Oyster Market by the Kampot River

This market is not a tourist market equipped with full facilities or fancy shops. It is a community market where locals openly sell fresh goods. The oysters laid out in large trays come from nearby seas, all fresh. Some are still wet with saltwater. I talked with some vendors who are locals fluent in Khmer, and some mixed in simple English so I could understand that these oysters were caught just this morning.

The freshness of the oysters here is what excites me, mr.hotsia, the most. When tasting the first bite, the sweetness of the seawater absorbed into the oyster meat and the soft, smooth texture unlike anywhere else made me want to tell everyone visiting Kampot not to miss this.

How to Eat Oysters Like the People of Kampot and My Personal Experience

In this market, there are small stalls ready to serve fresh oysters immediately. Some stalls offer sliced lime, fresh bird’s eye chili, and a spicy Khmer-style dipping sauce to season. I, mr.hotsia, chose to eat them mostly unseasoned first to experience the true taste of the oysters, then added lime and chili to enhance the sour and spicy flavors.

I must say the freshness and flavor of the oysters here are something I have never encountered anywhere else. Besides enjoying fresh seafood, you also get to see the lifestyle and deep connection of the locals with the river and sea.

Travel and Relaxation in Kampot Province

Getting to Kampot is not difficult. I once took a bus from Phnom Penh and stopped to visit morning markets in nearby towns, such as the Stung Market, which I have written about inStung Morning Marketwhich enriches the deep travel experience in Cambodia very well.

I also recommend trying local food in Kampot Province, including dry Khmer noodles and interesting street snacks, like those I tried in the dry Khmer noodles video in Kampot Province.Watch Videowhich added great flavor to this trip.

Additional Recommendations for Food Travelers

If you love fresh oysters at Kampot Market, I, mr.hotsia, recommend coming early in the morning because the oysters are freshest then and prices are reasonable. There are also other seafood like shrimp, crab, and fish sold in the same market. For those wanting to try fresh local seafood from Kampot, this is the place to taste before traveling to other parts of Cambodia.

Summary of Impressions from Kampot Oyster Market

For me, mr.hotsia, the Kampot Oyster Market is not just a fresh seafood market but a place that tells the story of the community, lifestyle, and the relationship between people and the sea clearly. Experiencing and eating fresh oysters by the river here is an unforgettable memory, and I invite everyone who loves food and travel to visit in person.
