Backpacking Southern Cambodia 13/41: Relaxing with Smoothies and Riverside Food in Kampot Province

Hello dear readers, this is mr.hotsia with another travel experience in southern Cambodia, Kampot Province, a beautiful and peaceful land that many may not be very familiar with. For me, this place is the perfect blend of nature and authentic Khmer lifestyle combined with the charm of the riverside that I want to invite everyone to relax, enjoy smoothies, and eat riverside food truly.

Kampot is a province located in southern Cambodia, not far from Takaew Province which I have mentioned before ina previous articleMy journey started from the heart of Phnom Penh city. I took a local bus passing through Kandal Province and arrived in Kampot after about 3 hours. The highlight here is the large river flowing through the city center, where the riverside is a meeting point for locals and tourists who come to relax without hurry.

What I, mr.hotsia, like most is the food and atmosphere by the Kampot river which are delicious and impressive. Most riverside restaurants here are small, open-air, with old wooden tables lined up by the clear, cool flowing river. The evening breeze rustling the leaves, the laughter and conversations of locals make me feel like experiencing real life, not commercial tourism.

What I like the most is ordering fresh Khmer fruit smoothies here. The smoothies in Kampot are not only sweet and refreshing but also full of the freshness of local fruits such as ripe mango, pineapple, and coconut. This smoothie became my signature drink on this trip. I often walked along the river holding a smoothie glass, feeling refreshed and completely relaxed.

Besides smoothies, the riverside food in Kampot offers a variety of choices, but what I, mr.hotsia, must recommend is fresh seafood from the Gulf of Thailand here. Whether it’s giant freshwater prawns, large oysters, or salt-grilled tilapia, the flavors are rich in authentic Khmer style. For those interested in more details about Kampot riverside seafood, try readingSeafood at Kampot Morning MarketandFresh Oysters at Kampot Seafood Marketwhich I have documented before.

Additionally, the morning market atmosphere in Kampot, not far from the riverside, is another destination I, mr.hotsia, recommend for a stroll. This market still retains the traditional local market vibe where southern Khmer people live their daily lives. Vendors line up selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and local foods that are hard to find in big cities. It’s a perfect place to experience the lifestyle and practice a little local language, as I did when visitingSvay Rieng Provincewhich is another province in Cambodia known for delicious grilled beef rice porridge breakfast.

Traveling and relaxing in Kampot reminded me of when I visited another Cambodian morning market inStung Treng Morning Marketwhich still holds the charm of a traditional market. The simplicity and friendliness of the people here reflect a life that is not rushed like in big cities, and Kampot gives a similar feeling.

In the evening by the Kampot river, I enjoy walking to watch the sunset reflecting on the water, seeing small boats passing by, accompanied by soft traditional music from nearby restaurants playing quietly. It’s a moment full of happiness and peace that is hard to find elsewhere.

For anyone wanting to experience a slow life in southern Cambodia, Kampot Province is the answer I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation. This place is not just a tourist city but a living city with real stories to discover.

In summary, my backpacking trip to Kampot was full of impressions: delicious food, refreshing smoothies, riverside lifestyle, and a traditional local market that still preserves its originality. If anyone is interested in experiencing this atmosphere, try planning a trip to Kampot. I guarantee you will fall in love just like mr.hotsia.
