Age 12 at Long Rak Hut, a Secret Tribal Junction in Cambodia
Once, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to journey into a little-known land in Cambodia, a land hidden deep within dense forests and far from the bustle of big cities. Here, "Age 12" does not mean ordinary childhood but is the name of a small junction in a secret tribal area that still firmly preserves the traditional way of life of the Khmer people.
Traveling to Age 12 Junction is not easy because there are no paved roads or clear signs. I had to rely on rough dirt roads and local motorcycles to reach a small village nestled among dense forests and clear streams. I encountered small bamboo huts that seemed to be homes of tribespeople still living in the ancient way. They rarely welcome strangers, but with mr.hotsia’s genuine heart and respect for their way of life, I was warmly received.
I witnessed a simple daily life deeply connected to nature. These tribespeople still use traditional wooden tools for farming, growing corn and rare local vegetables. Some skillfully catch fish in the streams with their bare hands. During the day, I sat and talked with village elders who shared stories of the tribe and how they maintain the natural balance without harming the surrounding forest.
The food I tasted at Long Rak Hut was simple but deeply flavorful, such as sticky rice cooked in banana leaves, served with freshly grilled fish caught from the stream, and a local herbal chili paste that was spicy yet mellow. Eating in this atmosphere made me truly understand the meaning of "eating to live," rather than just consuming for fashion or overly enhanced flavors.
After spending time exploring and learning about their way of life, I also had the chance to join a small local ritual held to pray for the forest’s abundance and the villagers’ good health. The ceremony was simple but full of faith and beliefs deeply rooted in the hearts of the people here.
Connecting experiences with nearby provinces
This journey into the secret Khmer tribe reminded me of Ta Kaew Province, where I once stayed while traveling from Vietnam through the Ta Kaew river border checkpoint.Read the story about traveling in Ta Kaew ProvinceConsidered the gateway to Cambodia’s northeastern region, Ta Kaew also has a simple lifestyle. It is a small town I like for its peace and the sincerity of its people. Although travel is not very convenient, the friendliness here makes me want to visit again.
Additionally, I recommend trying Khmer-style breakfast like grilled beef rice porridge in Svay Rieng Province.Read the article on grilled beef rice porridge in Svay Rieng ProvinceA small city restaurant where you can experience the warm atmosphere of locals sitting together eating rice porridge and sharing daily life stories.
Notes from mr.hotsia
This journey taught me that experiencing real life of people, no matter where in the world, helps us understand and appreciate simplicity and connection with nature. The secret tribe at Age 12 Junction is one of the lands that still firmly preserves its identity, even as the outside world spins fast and changes rapidly.
For anyone wanting a different experience from traditional cultural tourism, I recommend coming here once. You will realize that travel is not just about seeing places but about experiencing untouched lives and learning from these amazing people.
