Eating local food in Tbong Khmum, a new province in Cambodia
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to experience the reality of Tbong Khmum Province (Khmer: ត្បូងឃ្មុំ), which is one of the 25 provinces of Cambodia. This province is still not very well known among Thai tourists because there is limited information online. However, for those who enjoy deep travel experiences and want to explore authentic local lifestyles and food, Tbong Khmum is a very interesting destination.
I traveled here out of curiosity to find out what special dishes the Khmer people in this less-visited province have to offer. From my travel experience in nearby provinces like Takaew, which I have written about inTraveling Takaew Provincea province bordering Vietnam, I feel that authentic Khmer culture still strongly exists in rural communities and is fascinating to explore.
The atmosphere of the local market and lifestyle in Tbong Khmum
When entering the local market of Tbong Khmum, the aroma of Khmer spices and herbs fills the air. I walked past stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood caught from nearby rivers, all fresh and priced more affordably than in big cities. The market here is not housed in large buildings like city markets but retains a traditional charm, similar to the morning market in Stung that I once visited (Stung Morning Market) which is friendly and warm.
Most vendors speak local Khmer dialects; some speak a mix of Khmer Suoy and Isan languages, making conversations full of smiles and friendliness. I, mr.hotsia, took this opportunity to practice basic Khmer and exchange stories with locals, gaining insight into a unhurried lifestyle and truly absorbing the culture.
Local foods in Tbong Khmum that I must not miss
The food in Tbong Khmum is diverse and unique. The first dish I had to try was “Khmer rice porridge,” similar to what I had in Svay Rieng Province (Grilled Beef Rice Porridge from Svay Rieng Province) but with slight differences in spices and preparation. The rice porridge here has the fragrant aroma of herbs and a distinctive scent from lemongrass and ginger added.
There are also grilled meat and fresh grilled fish dishes sold along small streets around the market. I remember sitting and eating rice porridge with grilled meat while hearing the laughter of locals and smelling the firewood used to grill fish, which enhanced the dining atmosphere many times over.
A snack not to miss is “Lok Lak,” a local dish with spicy heat and a distinctive herbal aroma. I have tried this dish in Kampot Province (Seafood at Kampot Morning Market) and can confirm it is one of the flavors I was very impressed with. Eating this kind of food in Tbong Khmum, which is not yet adapted for tourism, made me feel like I encountered the true essence of Cambodian cuisine.
Travel and convenience in Tbong Khmum
To travel to Tbong Khmum, I used domestic transportation within Cambodia, passing through nearby towns and using local buses. Although not as comfortable as the air-conditioned tour buses I took to Takaew, it was a memorable experience that allowed me to fully immerse in the local atmosphere.
However, Tbong Khmum Province does not yet have luxury hotels or resorts like major tourist provinces but offers guesthouses and homestays at affordable prices. It is suitable for those who like simplicity and want to be close to the community. If you are interested in this kind of atmosphere, I recommend planning a visit.
