Tboung Khmum, a small peaceful province in the land of Khmer
When talking about provinces in Cambodia, many might know the big ones like Phnom Penh, Kampot, or Siem Reap, but for memr.hotsiaThen, traveling to a small province that few talk about likeTboung Khmumor sometimes calledTbong Khmum(Khmer: ត្បូងឃ្មុំ) is a charm not easily found in backpacking or independent travel
Tboung Khmum is one of Cambodia's 25 provinces, located in the northeastern part of the country. The overall atmosphere still preserves the traditional and simple rural lifestyle of the Khmer people. It is not as busy as the main tourist cities where many Chinese or Western tourists flock. Here, you will experience the sincerity of the locals, local food, and fresh markets that remain simple and unembellished unlike other places.
Traveling to Tboung Khmum
Traveling to Tboung Khmum is not as easy as to the main tourist cities. I traveled from Phnom Penh by local bus, which took about 4-5 hours, passing through routes where you can still see rice fields, haystacks, and authentic Khmer houses. On the way, I passed through Takaev Province (if anyone is interested in this province, I have written about it in the articleTraveling to Takaev Province) which is an important transit point before entering Tboung Khmum.
The atmosphere on the bus reminded me of traveling in the rural Isan region of Thailand, unhurried. Most passengers were locals going home or to the daily market. I happily enjoyed watching the scenery along the way.
Lifestyle and Fresh Markets in Tboung Khmum
Upon arriving in Tboung Khmum town, the first thing that impressed me was the calmness and friendliness of the people. Along both sides of the road, there are still open-air fresh markets where vendors arrange fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood caught from nearby rivers. The market here is not large or organized like in big cities but has a charming appeal. I enjoyed walking through the market, tasting local fruits, and chatting with the vendors who smiled warmly, responding in the local language that I tried to practice as mentioned in my article aboutGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Province
The morning market here is similar to the morning market in Stung Treng on the Thai side that I have experienced (read atStung Treng Morning Market). Most sellers are genuine locals, not tourist vendors, giving a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Local Food You Must Try
Tboung Khmum may not be as famous for food as Kampot or Siem Reap, but I think the food here has its own special charm, especially the hot rice porridge similar to authentic Khmer style that I have tasted in several provinces, like in Svay Rieng, which was flavorful and comforting.
Additionally, I tried dry Khmer-style noodles at a small roadside shop. The noodles looked simple but had a deep flavor, similar to what I described in my experience in Kampot Province (Seafood, Kampot Morning Market, Kampot Province), which anyone who enjoys eating in a local atmosphere with freshly prepared dishes from local ingredients should not miss.
Feelings from Traveling in Tboung Khmum
For me,mr.hotsiacoming to Tboung Khmum is like opening a door to the true Khmer world. It’s not just passing tourism but experiencing a simple lifestyle, tasty food, and tranquility not found in big cities.
Although traveling here may not be as convenient as other provinces, the intention to visit and see the real Khmer way of life is something I value more. The stories from the fresh markets, roads, and the smiles of the locals remain deeply in my heart.
If you want to truly experience Khmer life, not just tourist spots that are staged, I recommend trying to travel to Tboung Khmum at least once. Don’t forget to visit nearby provinces I have written about, such asTakaev Provinceor if you like fresh seafood, don’t missFresh Oyster Seafood Market, Kampot Provincewhich is not far away.
