Backpacking Southern Cambodia 26/41: Eating Ginger Chicken at a Local Shop in Front of the Largest Market in Sre Ambel

When it comes to traveling in southern Cambodia for me, mr.hotsia, it’s not just about changing locations but about experiencing the authentic lifestyle of the people here. In Sre Ambel, a small town with the largest market in the area, I had the chance to fully explore the morning market, browsing fresh and dried goods, looking for simple local food, and of course, the unforgettable ginger chicken dish.

The market in front of Sre Ambel is not a tourist market but a local market where residents sell fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and freshly cooked food. I walked past stalls selling fresh vegetables, many local varieties hard to find in Thailand, including Cambodian holy basil and uniquely scented sweet basil, as well as various spices used in authentic Cambodian cooking.

The atmosphere at this market was filled with local language chatter. Sellers and buyers smiled warmly and were very friendly. I chatted briefly with some local vendors, practicing the Cambodian language I had learned a bit. This kind of market visit reminded me of similar experiences I have written about in other articles.Traveling in Takeo Provincewhere I truly experienced the local way of life.

After walking around the market, I found a ginger chicken stall. From the outside, it looked ordinary — a small shop in front of the market, resembling a local house converted into a restaurant. I decided to try it immediately because the aroma of ginger stir-fried with chicken was so tempting.

The ginger chicken here was very different from what I had eaten in Thailand. The flavor was rich and slightly sweet from the palm sugar used, stir-fried with thick slices of fresh ginger giving a strong fragrant aroma. The chicken was tender and absorbed the spices perfectly. I ate it with hot steamed rice generously served by the vendor. This dish reminded me of the warmth of simple home-cooked food that is not overly seasoned but deeply satisfying.

After eating, I spoke with the owner, a local housewife. She said the shop has been open for a long time and most customers are locals. Tourists rarely visit, which made me feel even luckier to have tried truly authentic local food.

For travelers interested in deeply experiencing local life, I recommend visiting Sre Ambel and trying food at markets like this. You will see a unique side of southern Cambodia. If you want to explore nearby provinces, such as Takeo where I also stayed and visited markets,Traveling in Takeo Provinceis also a great option.

Additionally, if you enjoy lively morning market atmospheres with simple food, I recommend the articleStung Treng Morning Marketwhich has a similar vibe and preserves the charm of a traditional market perfectly.

During my travels in southern Cambodia, food and markets made me feel most connected to the local people, whether it was grilled beef rice porridge in Svay Rieng Province or fresh seafood in Kampot.Seafood, Kampot Morning MarketAll have their own charm and stories waiting to be discovered.

Ultimately, tasting ginger chicken at a local shop in front of the largest market in Sre Ambel was not just about the flavor but about experiencing the lifestyle, talking with people, and traveling in a way that makes mr.hotsia feel backpacking in southern Cambodia remains meaningful and exciting.
