Eating Cambodian Fried Rice with Tea Leaves in Stung Treng City, Cambodia
When talking about local food I, mr.hotsia, have experienced in Cambodia, one unforgettable impression is “Cambodian Fried Rice with Tea Leaves.” This dish looks simple but is full of flavor and an interesting eating culture. This time I traveled to Stung Treng, a small town located in the eastern part of Cambodia. The atmosphere here remains peaceful and full of traditional lifestyles. This place is a great starting point to truly taste authentic local food.
Traveling to Stung Treng is not difficult. I chose to travel by bus from a nearby city. The route passes through fields and simple Khmer houses on both sides, which adds excitement to visiting this town.
Upon arriving at the morning market here, the aroma of fresh food and spices immediately greeted my nose. The Stung Treng morning market has a charm similar to the Stung market I visited in other provinces of Cambodia (if interested in this Khmer market atmosphere, try readingStung Market). Most vendors here still sell their goods traditionally on the ground or small wooden tables without organized stalls.
The Cambodian Fried Rice with Tea Leaves I tried uses fresh tea leaves as the main ingredient, stir-fried with steamed rice and local spices in a hot pan. The tea leaves give the fried rice a unique aroma. The taste is slightly sour and bitter from the tea leaves, perfectly balanced with the sweet and rich flavor of the fried rice. This dish not only fills the stomach but also gives a refreshing and novel feeling I have never experienced in typical Khmer food.
Besides the fried rice with tea leaves, the market also offers other interesting local foods, such as grilled beef rice porridge from Svay Rieng Province, which I have tried and was very impressed with (read more atGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Province), as well as fresh seafood from Kampot Province, a must-try for seafood lovers (Seafood at Kampot Morning Market, Kampot Province)
Eating Cambodian Fried Rice with Tea Leaves in the small fresh market atmosphere of Stung Treng made me feel the simple and harmonious lifestyle of the Khmer people with nature. Sitting and eating hot fried rice by the market with vendors chatting loudly, motorcycles passing by, and children playing is a memorable scene that made my food experience much more special.
For those interested in trying the taste of Cambodian Fried Rice with Tea Leaves, I recommend visiting Stung Treng in the morning when the market is lively and offers a wide variety of fresh goods. I, mr.hotsia, suggest exploring the market and talking with locals to learn about eating methods and culture, which will definitely add more fun to your trip.
If you are traveling from Phnom Penh or other provinces in Cambodia, stopping by and resting in Takaew Province is another interesting option. I have written about my travel experiences there in the articleTraveling in Takaew Province, which is not far from the route to Stung Treng and provides a broader view of diverse Khmer lifestyles.
