Kampong Chhnang Cambodia: The Dream Pottery Town and Floating Houses of mr.hotsia
When talking about Cambodian provinces with unique charm that are rarely mentioned, mr.hotsia had the chance to travel and experience the real lifestyle here.Kampong Chhnang(Kampong Chhnang) is a province in central Cambodia that blends rural life with clearly preserved ancient culture, especially famous for its unique pottery craftsmanship.
The first time I arrived in Kampong Chhnang, I felt a peacefulness different from the big cities in Cambodia. Although it is not a major tourist city, it has a charm that made mr.hotsia feel like discovering a new side of Cambodia beyond just Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, which most people know well.
Tonle Sap Riverbank Lifestyle and Floating Houses
One of the places that impressed me greatly wasthe Floating Villagelocated on the Tonle Sap Riverbank, not far from Kampong Chhnang city center, just 2 kilometers away. A motorbike taxi ride costs about 20 baht. Here, hundreds of floating houses line the water surface. The riverside atmosphere is simple, and the community still lives traditionally. Local restaurants operate along the shore. This is not just a regular viewpoint but a community that truly lives close to nature.
I sat enjoying the view, listening to the flowing water and the villagers’ conversations, which helped me relax as if escaping the city's hustle for a while. For those who like to stroll markets or seek authentic local food, this place is very interesting because fresh food from the Tonle Sap River is available to taste.
The Pottery Town: A Charm Not to Miss
Another highlight of Kampong Chhnang is its famous pottery. There are villages where locals still craft pots, jars, vases, and other pottery with unique characteristics. The bright red color, different from elsewhere, made me want to visit these villages someday. Although I didn’t have time to visit the pottery villages directly this time, I talked with locals and saw their works in various shops around town.
If you are interested in traditional arts and crafts, I recommend planning a visit to the pottery villages about 7 kilometers from the city. It’s a great opportunity to see the production process and experience the local culture authentically.
Travel and Convenience in Kampong Chhnang
Traveling to Kampong Chhnang is not difficult. I traveled from Phnom Penh by bus, which took about 1-2 hours depending on traffic that day. There are many motorbike taxis here, and many drivers can speak some Thai, making price negotiation and communication easier.
Motorbike taxi fares are very affordable, about 20-30 baht, making it a good option for exploring the city and nearby attractions. Additionally, there is a riverside pier where boats from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap stop, making Kampong Chhnang an interesting rest point for river travelers.
Taste Local Food and Market Atmosphere
I didn’t miss trying local food here, mostly focusing on fresh ingredients from the river and local vegetable gardens. The authentic Khmer flavors here differ from what I’ve had in big cities, similar to my experience with grilled beef rice porridge in Svay Rieng Province (Read more) or the morning market in Stung Treng with its traditional street market atmosphere (Read more) Kampong Chhnang also has a fresh market that offers a similar feeling.
The market in Kampong Chhnang city showed me the real daily life of locals. Vendors and customers chatted casually. Fresh vegetables, fish, and seafood from Tonle Sap were sold at affordable prices. There are not many tourists here, so the atmosphere feels warm and genuine.
Connections to Nearby Provinces and Routes in Cambodia
If you want to continue traveling or extend your trip, I recommend visiting Takeo Province, which is not far away, especially if you travel from Vietnam via the Lower Mekong River.Read about my travel story in Takeo Provincewhere I stayed and experienced the true lifestyle of a small Cambodian town. Or if you like fresh seafood, visit Kampot Province, which has abundant seafood markets and fresh oysters.Read more about Kampot seafood
