Enjoy Authentic Khmer Food in Kampong Chhnang: A Small Town with Big Flavors
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience the authentic Khmer food atmosphere in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia. This town may not be very familiar to many Thai tourists, but for me, it is full of genuine local lifestyle vibes and food that deeply reflects Khmer culture.
I traveled here after passing through Ta Kaew Province, which I have previously written about ina previous articleIn Cambodia, I usually choose local buses or boats for travel because they allow us to truly see the local way of life. Kampong Chhnang is one of the small towns along the Mekong River with many fresh markets and local restaurants to choose from.
Local Market with Must-Try Dishes
In the evening, I stopped by the Kampong Chhnang market, where locals buy fresh produce and home-style food. Here, there are curry shops where villagers prefer to buy takeout rather than dine in, which is a culture quite different from ours. I tried authentic Khmer curry with a balanced flavor of sour, sweet, and salty.
A signature dish of Kampong Chhnang is "grilled catfish." They grill fresh catfish, which is not very large, priced at 50-60 baht per fish. Compared to home, it might seem a bit expensive, but the taste and freshness make it worthwhile. The grilled catfish here is eaten with a special sweet fish sauce that resembles yellow water chestnut syrup. I sensed soybeans mixed in, giving the sauce a surprisingly harmonious sweet, sour, and salty flavor. It is a taste I will never forget.
Khmer Breakfast: Rice with Pork and Steamed Egg
The next morning, I chose to try the Khmer breakfast here, which is similar to what I experienced in Svay Rieng Province withgrilled beef rice porridgebut the breakfast in Kampong Chhnang is rice topped with pork and a steamed egg. The flavor is rich and very smooth. I sat eating near the bus queue to Phu Sath, watching people pass by, greeting each other warmly, and chatting a little Khmer with the food vendor. It was an experience that made me feel like I was truly living the local life, not just a passing tourist.
Local Desserts and Market Atmosphere Not to Be Missed
Besides savory food, Kampong Chhnang's desserts are equally unique, such as "Knak" and "Ancient Bok Dessert," which are hard to find in big cities. I tried them and found the sweetness just right with a crunchy and chewy texture that was unusual and impressive.
The market in Kampong Chhnang still retains the traditional fresh market atmosphere, with friendly vendors chatting, similar to the morning market in Stung I wrote about ina previous articleThis atmosphere reminded me of a simple and warm way of life. Although it is a small place, the liveliness and sincerity of the people here impressed me greatly.
