Kanom Jeen in Ta Kaew Province: Authentic Khmer Flavors and Atmosphere from the Heart of mr.hotsia
When talking about Ta Kaew Province in Cambodia, many might not be very familiar with the name because it is not a main destination for foreign tourists visiting Cambodia. But for me, mr.hotsia, coming here to stroll around and taste the local food in this province is a unique experience. The Khmer Kanom Jeen here is one of the highlights I sincerely want to recommend.
Ta Kaew Province is located near the Vietnam border. This small town has a peaceful yet lively atmosphere of its own. I traveled here by bus from Phnom Penh, which took about two and a half hours, passing through Kandal Province. The bus from Soraya Tour that I took was air-conditioned but a bit warm, yet still okay for a long ride. In Ta Kaew town, there is a bustling morning market, and the Khmer Kanom Jeen I will tell you about is near the town’s iconic roundabout. At that roundabout stands a bright golden statue of Grandpa Ta Kaew and his wife holding a cane, which is a meeting point and the starting place of my tasting walk this time.
Starting Point at the Kanom Jeen Shop by Ta Kaew Roundabout
Walking around the roundabout, you will see the Kanom Jeen shop next to a small barber shop and Soraya’s parking lot. This shop is popular with locals and always has customers lining up. I ordered the authentic Khmer style Kanom Jeen to try. The Kanom Jeen sauce here has a unique characteristic of being slightly sweet, which is different from the northern Thai Kanom Jeen I am familiar with. They also use thinly sliced lotus stems as a side dish instead of the usual fresh vegetables, adding a crispy texture and a distinctive flavor to this dish.
Another thing I really like is the use of banana leaves to serve the Kanom Jeen instead of plastic plates or bowls as seen in many places. It gives a natural feeling and shows attention to detail. This Kanom Jeen dish eaten with the sweet sauce and crispy lotus stems perfectly completes the flavor. I have traveled to many provinces in Cambodia, and the Kanom Jeen in Ta Kaew is truly delicious and unique.
Desserts and Late-Night Food in the Roundabout Area
Next to the Kanom Jeen shop, there is an interesting dessert shop selling a large version of bua loy (rice flour balls) with shaved ice. The taste is sweet and fragrant, refreshing for the hot weather of Ta Kaew. The shop owner can speak some Thai, but I still chose to use a little Khmer to communicate out of respect for their lifestyle and culture.
In the evening, this area turns into a late-night grilled food district filled with the aroma of grilled meat and steamed eggs, which are popular dishes among Ta Kaew locals. I, mr.hotsia, have tried them and must say the freshness and flavor of the food here are extraordinary. Although not crowded, the lively atmosphere and friendliness of the people make it very impressive.
Walking and Eating Kanom Jeen Experience in Ta Kaew Province
Visiting Ta Kaew Province is not just about Kanom Jeen or food, but also a great opportunity to learn about the Khmer way of life in this border town. I, mr.hotsia, explored the Ta Kaew morning market not far from the Kanom Jeen shop. The vendors welcomed me with smiles and friendly greetings. The market atmosphere remains traditional, with most sellers still openly selling their goods, unlike many markets in Cambodia that are moving indoors.
If you are interested in deep Khmer cuisine or want to experience local flavors without many tourists around, I recommend visiting Ta Kaew once and trying the Khmer Kanom Jeen here. You will realize how the flavors of food in each Cambodian province differ and are fascinating.

If you want to taste fresh seafood from Cambodia, I recommend visitingKampot Morning Marketwhich is another province abundant in ingredients and exciting food flavors.
For me, mr.hotsia, this trip to Ta Kaew was not just about eating but opening my worldview and experiencing the real lifestyle of Khmer people in this border province that still retains a simple and clear charm.
