Taste Khmer Bualoy dessert in Ta Kaew Province, Cambodia
Speaking of my travels in Cambodia, Ta Kaew Province (TA KAEW) is a striking and quite interesting province due to its location next to the Vietnam border, especially the immigration checkpoint where I once crossed by boat from Vietnam to this province. Although I didn’t stop last time, this time I intentionally traveled to Ta Kaew town, amidst the small provincial capital atmosphere with a simple and warm way of life.
One of the memorable experiences I want to share is tasting a unique local dessert, which isKhmer Bualoy Dessertthat I encountered while traveling from Battambang to Phnom Penh. My vehicle stopped for lunch at a small restaurant in Ta Kaew Province, and that was the first time I tried this dessert.
Khmer Bualoy Dessert: A Unique Delight
The Bualoy here is much larger than the ones back home. The filling is made of beans, giving a perfectly sweet and fragrant taste—not overly sweet or cloying. Importantly, it is served with shaved ice and topped with rich, aromatic coconut milk. The scent of coconut milk combined with the coolness of the shaved ice turns this seemingly ordinary large Bualoy into a dessert that I loved so much I ordered a second bowl.
What I liked most was the simplicity and genuine freshness of the dessert, especially in Ta Kaew Province, which still preserves its traditional local character, unlike desserts in big cities that are often modified and lose their authentic flavor.
Lifestyle and Simplicity in Ta Kaew Town
After tasting the Bualoy, I explored around Ta Kaew town, which is compact, easy to walk, and full of local market atmosphere and kind-hearted people. The hotel I stayed at is calledHouy Meyly Guest Houselocated behind the market. It is a comfortable and peaceful accommodation, perfect for those who want to experience the true natural vibe of this town.
To get here from Phnom Penh, I chose to take a bus from Soraya Tour company, which takes about 2 and a half hours. There are 4 trips daily, allowing me to plan my trip smoothly. Although the bus was a bit hot along the way, arriving in Ta Kaew, the refreshing local atmosphere made up for the fatigue.
Local Markets and Khmer Food Worth Trying
Besides Bualoy, Ta Kaew Province offers many other local Khmer dishes worth trying, such as Khmer sticky rice dumplings which differ noticeably from ours, being mild and not too sweet. There are also other desserts like "Khnom On Son" sticky rice dumplings, available only during festivals like Buddhist Lent Day, similar to our own Lent Day traditions.
If you are interested in trying a simple breakfast, I recommend tryingGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Provincewhich I have tried. The atmosphere is warm and the taste is mellow. Or if you want to experience a traditional local market, try visitingStueng Morning Marketwhich offers fresh produce and a very friendly atmosphere.
Travel Tips and Stopover Recommendations
If traveling from Battambang or Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, the route passing through Ta Kaew Province is a great stopover, especially if you enjoy trying local food and desserts along the way. I personally like to stop here to taste sweets before continuing to other destinations.
For those interested in getting to know Ta Kaew Province more deeply, I have an article recommendingTraveling Ta Kaew Province (takaew)which I wrote, sharing travel experiences and the lifestyle of the people here comprehensively.
Summary of Impressions from Bualoy and the Journey
Traveling to Ta Kaew Province not only broadened my cultural and local lifestyle perspectives but also led me to discover Khmer Bualoy with its distinct sweet and fragrant taste unlike any I had before. The simplicity of the town and the sincerity of its people impressed me deeply and made me want to visit again.
If you are a foodie traveler who loves discovering unique local dishes, I highly recommend experiencing the atmosphere and taste of Bualoy in Ta Kaew Province at least once. I guarantee you will have a delicious and memorable experience unlike anywhere else in Cambodia.
