Khnom Khmer Swan Egg Cake: A sweet treat from Ta Kaew Market, Cambodia

Once, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel through Ta Kaew Province, a small border province between Cambodia and Vietnam. Here, I discovered a local dessert calledKhnom Khmer Swan Egg Cake (khnom khmer)This dessert is one of the popular snacks among Cambodians at the morning market in Ta Kaew town. It is a cultural charm I, mr.hotsia, especially enjoy when traveling in this region.

Ta Kaew is a province with few foreign tourists, but the simplicity and sincerity of the locals always captivate me whenever I visit. Traveling here is convenient by bus from Phnom Penh, passing through Kandal Province, taking about 2.5 hours. The air-conditioned bus I took was a bit warm, but it gave me a chance to take a deep breath and prepare to explore the morning market in Ta Kaew town.

The morning market in Ta Kaew is my favorite place to stroll because it is full of vibrant life and authentic local food. Unlike typical tourist markets, it is simple and straightforward. Most vendors are genuine locals selling products from their farms and homes.

Khnom Khmer Swan Egg Cake was one of the desserts I found while browsing the market. It looks like a golden yellow owl egg or swan egg, mildly sweet with a soft, smooth texture. The taste is similar to Thai desserts like Khanom Khai Tao or Khanom Khai, but it has a unique character that makes it distinctly Khmer, thanks to the fragrant coconut milk and palm sugar used in its preparation. This snack feels warm and comforting, like eating a homemade treat.

Another special aspect of Khnom Khmer Swan Egg Cake is its traditional preparation method. The vendor’s hands scoop coconut milk batter into small round iron molds, sprinkle a bit of egg yolk or duck egg, then press the lid and grill until perfectly cooked. I, mr.hotsia, watched this fresh preparation at Ta Kaew market, which deepened my appreciation for this dessert. It is not just a sweet treat but a cultural heritage and way of life for rural Cambodians.

Ta Kaew market also offers many other interesting foods, such as a pork section where I saw tiny piglets freshly sold in baskets, and the famous Kampot black pepper, which I bought as a souvenir. Prices here are much cheaper than Phnom Penh, and I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend trying these when you visit.

For those who want to experience the same atmosphere as I did, I recommend visiting Ta Kaew market in the morning and don’t forget to taste the Khnom Khmer Swan Egg Cake, one of the market’s highlights.
