Shaving with mr.hotsia in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia

For a traveler like me, mr.hotsia, experiencing local lifestyles at every destination is the true joy, and this time in Kampong Chhnang, a small town by an important river in Cambodia, it did not disappoint at all.

Kampong Chhnang is not a large city like Phnom Penh or Kampot, but its hidden charm is the simplicity and daily life that amazingly preserves its original state. This time I had the chance to try a local shaving experience here, which is a small thing but left a strong impression.

After arriving in Kampong Chhnang, I explored the lively local market filled with bustling people, the sound of Khmer mixed with the aroma of food and a warm atmosphere. Not far from the market, there was a small traditional shaving shop. mr.hotsia did not hesitate and quickly sat down to wait for my turn.

The atmosphere in the shaving shop was very different from modern shops in big cities. Everything was arranged simply. Soap stains and well-maintained old razors reflected the dedication and skill of the local barber. I talked with one local barber who said this work has been passed down from generation to generation, and although the world has changed, they still carefully preserve the art of hand shaving.

While shaving, I heard the sound of flowing water from the nearby river, the scent of herbs and ancient soap blended with the community's conversations. It was a very peaceful and profound moment. mr.hotsia felt like traveling back in time to truly experience the traditional life of the Khmer people.

Kampong Chhnang is not just about shaving. I also walked around the morning market here, encountering fresh vegetables, fruits, and a variety of local foods, similar to markets in nearby provinces like Takaew, where I had traveled before.Takaew Marketis another place full of vibrant life and impressive local charm.

Speaking of breakfast, if anyone has read my stories aboutGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Provinceyou might imagine that Khmer breakfast is simple but full of flavor and warmth. In Kampong Chhnang itself, there is a small rice porridge shop I like to sit and chat with locals, another experience I often recommend trying.

After shaving, I strolled along small streets to explore the simple lifestyle of the people. There is a fishing village by the river where locals go fishing in the morning, and a fresh market full of fresh seafood, similar to what I visited beforeKampot Morning Marketwhich is a nearby province famous for fresh and diverse seafood.

What impressed me the most was the warmth of the local people here. Even though my Khmer language is not fluent, the friendly smiles and greetings made me feel at home. Trying the local shave was like opening a door into the true life and culture of the people here.

If anyone is interested in trying this classic experience, mr.hotsia recommends visiting Kampong Chhnang early in the morning because both the market and shaving shops are lively, and you will see the true lifestyle of the riverside community in Cambodia.

For those who enjoy deep travel and want to experience local life unhurriedly, I can say Kampong Chhnang will not disappoint. And if you like similar local lifestyles, I recommend reading my story aboutStung Morning Marketwhich still holds the charm of traditional fresh markets in Cambodia.
