Eating Khmer Fermented Fish Rice with mr.hotsia: A flavor you must try from the land of Khmer

When talking about traditional food that truly reflects the lifestyle of the Cambodian people, “Khmer fermented fish rice” is one of the dishes that mr.hotsia insists you must not miss on this trip. Although the province I visited this time is neither a major province nor a famous tourist city, the taste and aroma of the fermented fish rice dish were filled with the unique charm of authentic Khmer cuisine.

This time I traveled from Phnom Penh, passing through Takaew Province, which is a province bordering Vietnam.I had passed this route before but never stopped to rest. This time, I intentionally stayed one night in Takaew town before continuing my journey to the destination where I could try Khmer fermented fish rice.

The Khmer fermented fish rice I encountered was hot steamed rice mixed with fragrant fermented fish sauce that had been fermented to produce a unique aroma, not as pungent as the fermented fish sauce from our home. The pleasant aroma of the fermented fish blended with chili oil and some spices added by the vendor made this rice dish unforgettable.

What makes this Khmer fermented fish rice dish very different from our local fermented fish rice is the ingredients used and the flavor on the plate. Fresh vegetables are carefully arranged, such as basil leaves, local holy basil, and pickled vegetables that add a sweet and sour taste to the rice. Additionally, small crispy fried fish are served mixed with the rice, adding variety to the texture in every bite.

mr.hotsia tried this Khmer fermented fish rice at a small morning market in Takaew town, where the market atmosphere was filled with the simplicity of the locals, amidst conversations in the local language and the aroma of food wafting through the air. I saw the vendor carefully preparing every step, from mixing the rice, plating, to selecting side dishes that matched the flavor of the fermented fish sauce.

For those who like spicy and strong flavors, Khmer fermented fish rice comes with a spicy fermented fish chili paste to add as you like. This made me feel the true essence of Khmer food that is not overly sweet or bland but focuses on a balanced and easy-to-eat intensity of flavor.

The special thing about this traditional dish is the care in selecting ingredients by the locals, especially the locally fermented fish sauce, which results in a flavor different from Thai fermented fish sauce or even Vietnamese fermented fish sauce nearby. I believe Khmer fermented fish rice clearly reflects the lifestyle and culture of the Cambodian people.

If anyone is interested in trying this dish, I recommend strolling through a morning market like the one I visited. Besides tasting Khmer fermented fish rice, you will also experience the simple and friendly lifestyle of the locals in Takaew Province. Or you can continue traveling to Kampot Province, which I have previously written about.Seafood and Morning Market in Kampotis another great option to experience authentic Khmer local food.

I also enjoy walking around the morning market in Stung, not far from the Thai-Cambodian border, which still retains the charm of a traditional market.Seeing vendors and locals chatting casually creates an atmosphere that reminds me of the time I ate Khmer fermented fish rice at that small market.

Simply put, “Khmer fermented fish rice” is not just a dish but a travel experience for mr.hotsia to immerse in the lifestyle and authentic flavors of Cambodia in a way not found in typical travel guides.

For those who love cooking or want to travel to Cambodia, try planning a visit to Takaew or Kampot Province and don’t forget to find Khmer fermented fish rice to eat. I guarantee the taste will leave a lasting impression unlike any other dish I have ever encountered.
