Eating Cambodian Duck Rice with Dim Sum - A real dining experience from mr.hotsia

I must say, my trip to Cambodia with mr.hotsia was not just about visiting temples or big cities. The local food experience truly connected me with the lifestyle of the people here. This time, I had the chance to try the dishCambodian-style Duck Rice with Dim Sumwhich is a delicious find I discovered at a morning market in a small town where I stopped over on the way from Ta Kaew Province to Phnom Penh.

Ta Kaew Province, which I have previously written about in the articleTraveling Ta Kaew Province (Takaew)It is a small province bordering Vietnam. I traveled there by a Soraya Tour bus from Phnom Penh, which took about two and a half hours. Although the bus had air conditioning, it was not very cold, making me feel that some provinces in Cambodia still hold a charming simplicity and authenticity compared to the bustling big cities.

After staying at Houy Meyly Guest House near the Ta Kaew market, I went to explore the morning market and caught the aroma of food being cooked. Following the scent, I found a duck rice with dim sum stall where the owner was carefully arranging plates. Large tender duck with crispy skin was placed on hot steamed rice, accompanied by various dim sum such as shumai, steamed buns, and fried dumplings.

The taste of duck rice here was different from what I had eaten in Thailand. The duck meat was tender with the fragrant Cambodian spices that were not too spicy. The duck sauce was rich and flavorful, favored by locals. Paired with fresh dim sum and a special dipping sauce, I found myself going back for seconds. It’s no surprise that this stall has a steady flow of local customers.

This duck rice with dim sum dish is a common breakfast found in many Cambodian towns, similar to what I described in the articleGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Provincewhere breakfast here focuses on rice porridge, duck rice, or simple dishes that provide full energy for the day’s work or daily life.

The atmosphere of the morning market and small eateries like this reminded me of the morning market in Stueng, which I once visited.Stueng Morning MarketIt still retains a rustic vibe with vendors chatting in the local language in a friendly manner. Eating at a morning market like this makes you truly absorb the Cambodian way of life.

Besides duck rice with dim sum, the market also offers a variety of Cambodian dim sum to try, including pork shumai mixed with Cambodian spices and freshly fried crispy dumplings with a fragrant aroma filling the area. I, mr.hotsia, did not miss ordering these to enjoy with plain rice and a small soup served as a complete set.

After eating, I had a brief chat with the owner who told me the stall has been run since his parents’ generation and still preserves the traditional recipes to maintain the authentic Cambodian flavor and uniqueness. I also practiced a little Khmer language as I have done on many trips before, opening up a deeper cultural experience and understanding.

If you like local food and want to try dishes not commonly found in regular restaurants, this Cambodian duck rice with dim sum is a must-try. Traveling to Ta Kaew Province is easy and convenient, with buses from Phnom Penh taking less than three hours. I definitely recommend exploring the morning market and tasting local food there before continuing your journey.
