Eating Khmer Roasted Duck Rice: A Flavor You Must Try in the Land of Cambodia
When mr.hotsia crossed the border from Vietnam into Cambodia via Ta Kaew (TA KAEW), a small town located on the lower Mekong River, I had the chance to taste a simple yet charming local dish called “Khmer Roasted Duck Rice,” which is one of the must-try dishes when visiting this land.
Ta Kaew, where I stayed for one night, is a peaceful town with a simple lifestyle. The fresh market here still preserves its natural charm, similar to the Stung Market I once visited in Cambodia, where vendors speak the local language and the atmosphere is warm and unlike the big markets in large cities.
The Khmer Roasted Duck Rice I found in a small market in Ta Kaew was special because of its rich and balanced sauce, fragrant with authentic Khmer spices. The duck meat used was free of any gamey smell and tender. I stumbled upon this stall while exploring the town, and luckily the owner was a very kind local who smiled and chatted with me, teaching me how to eat it the authentic Khmer way.
The soft steamed rice was beautifully arranged under large pieces of duck topped with a slightly sweet and salty sauce, accompanied by fresh vegetables and cucumber for added freshness. With the first bite, the fragrant spices in the sauce blended perfectly with the tender duck meat. mr.hotsia felt like experiencing the true taste of Cambodia in every bite.
Besides the roasted duck rice, I also saw other interesting dishes in the market, such as grilled beef rice porridge from Svay Rieng Province, which I have described in a previous article.Grilled Beef Rice Porridge from Svay Rieng ProvinceAnd fresh seafood in KampotSeafood at Kampot Morning Market, Kampot ProvinceAll of which are part of the diverse and fascinating food culture in Cambodia.
The appeal of Khmer Roasted Duck Rice is not only in its flavor but also in the atmosphere of the market and the lifestyle of people in these small towns. I remember sitting and eating at that stall while market-goers passed by, greeting each other with smiles and friendly words, making me feel like part of the simple and warm daily life of the Khmer people.
For those who want to try authentic Khmer Roasted Duck Rice, I recommend planning a trip to Ta Kaew Province, which is easily accessible from Phnom Penh by Soraya bus company, which I have personally used. The bus passes through Kandal Province and takes about 2.5 hours.Traveling to Ta Kaew (takaew) ProvinceThere are several bus trips daily, and although the bus has air conditioning, it is not very cold. This journey is truly an adventurous experience for real travelers.
Upon arriving in Ta Kaew town, you will find limited accommodation options. I chose to stay at Houy Meyly Guest House, a newly built place near the market, which made it very convenient to walk and taste food as well as explore the market in the morning.
The next day, I also visited the Stung Morning Market mentioned in my previous article.Stung Morning MarketThis market still preserves the charm of a traditional market very well, perfect for those who want to experience the authentic atmosphere of buying fresh food and local products.
In the video I recorded and want everyone to see, you will notice that eating Khmer Roasted Duck Rice is not just about food but a journey full of experiences and genuine feelings. You can watch it atEating Khmer Roasted Duck Ricewhich I recorded, giving you a clearer picture and understanding of the flavors along with the atmosphere of a small town in Cambodia.
Finally, for mr.hotsia, eating Khmer Roasted Duck Rice is not just about satisfying hunger but connecting with the warm and simple culture and lifestyle of the Khmer people. If you love traveling and tasting unique foods, I highly recommend experiencing it yourself.
