Fishing in the Mekong River at Strung Treng, Cambodia: Riverside Life that mr.hotsia Must Share
If you ask me where in Cambodia I am most impressed by the Mekong riverside lifestyle, Strung Treng is the answer I wholeheartedly confirm. Once, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to wake up at 5 AM to experience the early morning atmosphere by the Mekong River at the Strung Treng Fish Bridge, an activity I highly recommend travelers visiting this province to try at least once in their lives.
Waking up early before dawn when the sky is still dark, I slowly walked from my accommodation to the Mekong riverside, hoping the sunrise would be as beautiful as I had seen in photos. Although clouds partially blocked the sun that day, what I received in return was the sight of locals returning from fishing on the Mekong in small boats lined up along the pier. These people live a traditional lifestyle, with parents and children sleeping warmly on the boats, and the fish they catch look unusual compared to those we see in local markets back home.
Seeing vendors and locals waiting to buy fresh fish directly from the boats is an image that clearly reflects the relationship between people and the Mekong River. It's not just about fishing but a lifelong bond in a way of life passed down continuously. I, traveling far from Thailand, deeply experienced this simple yet charming lifestyle.
Strung Treng: A Small Town Full of the Colors of Mekong River Life
Strung Treng Province is located in northern Cambodia, adjacent to the great and fertile Mekong River. The geography and nature here allow locals to rely on the Mekong daily, whether for fishing, transportation, or local trade. I have previously written about other provinces in Cambodia, such asTakaev Provincewhich is also a small town with a similarly simple lifestyle. But Strung Treng has a unique charm I particularly like: the diversity of freshwater fish caught and the lively morning fish market atmosphere.
The fish market in Strung Treng is bustling from early morning. Locals bring their catch to weigh and sell on rafts to local vendors. I strolled along the rafts, chatting with vendors and small-scale fishermen who spoke native Khmer, some mixed with Lao or Isan accents. This diversity reflects the connection of riverside communities expanding across several countries. Visiting here is not just like visiting a single province but truly experiencing the culture and life of the Mekong riverside people.
Travel and Relaxation in Strung Treng
Traveling to Strung Treng may not be as convenient as to bigger cities, but that charm makes me want to return again. For those interested in continuing their trip from Takaev Province, I have recommended traveling from Phnom Penh to Takaev by Sorya Tour bus,Takaev Provincewhich takes about two and a half hours, and from there, you can take a boat or local transport to Strung Treng.
I chose to stay at a small guesthouse near the fish market in Strung Treng to fully experience local life. Walking around the morning market and trying local food by the Mekong River left a strong impression on me. Breakfast here is usually hot rice porridge served with grilled meat or grilled fish, similar to what I tasted inSvay Rieng Provincewhere the taste and atmosphere also reflect the simplicity of the Khmer community very well.
Why Must You Wake Up Early to Visit Strung Treng?
I want to say that waking up early to see the villagers fishing in the Mekong River is the highlight of visiting Strung Treng. At the fish bridge by the Mekong, you will see various unusual fish species and capture real-life scenes of the locals, whether using small wooden boats to fish or vendors waiting to buy fish. These are scenes rarely found in big modern cities.
On clear days, I have seen the sunrise shining through the Mekong River bridge at Strung Treng, as beautiful as anywhere else. Even when clouds blocked the sun like on my latest visit, the atmosphere and feelings were still unique and memorable.
If you enjoy traveling like mr.hotsia, try walking and fishing at Strung Treng.
For those who love to experience authentic lifestyles, I, mr.hotsia, recommend not missing Strung Treng. Here, you will find not only beautiful nature but also learn about the riverside community that has preserved its unique identity fully. I will return many times because the feeling of experiencing life by the Mekong, the fish bridge, and the morning market fills the heart of any traveler seeking something different and genuine.
