I observed what the shops mostly sold in the evening, night, and morning. In Kampong Chhnang, evening shops sell curry by the scoop. Locals buy food to eat at home and do not prefer eating at the shops. Almost every shop sells grilled catfish and other grilled fish. The highlight is Kampong Chhnang's grilled catfish eaten with a special sweet fish sauce.
The sauce looks like yellow sweet mung bean soup. I understand it contains soybeans as well. Tasting it reminded me of the sweet fish sauce from Bang Bo. It is sour, sweet, and slightly salty. Grilled catfish in Kampong Chhnang is not cheap, priced at 50 - 60 baht each. The fish is not overly large. It is similar to our braised eggs, but the Khmer do not call it braised eggs, though it is very similar. Breakfast is rice topped with pork, but special because it includes steamed eggs. I ate this near the bus queue to Phu Sath and it was very delicious. Other foods and snacks I saw only in Kampong Chhnang are "Kruak" and "Ancient Bok Snack."
