The provinces are Kampong Cham and Tbong Khmum. I traveled to Tbong Khmum province and then returned to Kampong Cham again. The town of Kampong Cham is located on the Mekong River. Today, a riverside dam and paved walkways have been built along the Mekong River. There are statues and fountains, making it a relaxing spot for locals and some tourists who come for a stroll, though not many. Several new businesses have opened, especially Khmer massage parlors.

These cater to the increasing number of tourists. Hotels are also located along the Mekong River. Tourists like to cycle around Kampong Cham town. The backpacker area, however, is not along the Mekong River as there are not many Westerners there. Mostly non-Western tourists stay in this zone. The night market still has its charm. Khmer fruit smoothies are delicious. The morning market sells plenty of fish from the Mekong River. There is an old-fashioned pastry shop making Portuguese-influenced pastries. When I visited before to take photos, now they do not allow photography.

This visit to Kampong Cham coincided with the season for eating giant Cambodian tarantulas (eating Tarantula). In Khmer, they are called 'bing'; in Thai, 'bueng'. During my visit, it was the egg-laying season. They are commonly fried with garlic and sold for 30 baht each. I tried some and have a video clip. In Kampong Cham, I had my hair washed Khmer style at a hair salon, then tried a Kampong Cham style massage at a corner shop on the way to the night market. The massage was quite good.

The price was about 100-200 baht per hour, not expensive, and the service was good. I walked along the Mekong River, visited the morning and evening markets, then took a Soraya bus back to Phnom Penh. Mr.Hotsia, Enjoying to the fullest, January 2016.
