mr.hotsia@Kyaukpyu 16/20: Satisfying Chinese Food at Zhao Pu Kyaukpyu Chinese Food

When talking about charming coastal towns in Myanmar, Kyaukpyu is one of the cities that I, mr.hotsia, must say is extraordinary. The food here is diverse and definitely infused with Chinese cultural influences perfectly blended. Especially the Zhao Pu area, a small neighborhood full of authentic Chinese restaurants that I have traveled to try. I must say it was truly satisfying.

First encountering Zhao Pu at dawn, I walked past a fresh market filled with the chatter of vendors. The crowing of fighting cocks mixed with the scent of Chinese herbs and various spices made the atmosphere lively and warmly inviting. The authentic Chinese restaurant I chose to sit in was right next to the fresh market, allowing me to see fresh ingredients from the South China Sea and nearby vegetable gardens being prepared in each dish.

A must-try dish for me is “Zhao Pu Fried Rice,” a special recipe using beautifully separated grains of rice stir-fried with char siu, crispy pork, and fresh vegetables, scented with sesame oil and a special soy sauce. The flavor is rich but not greasy. Paired with hot tea served by the restaurant, it made for a fulfilling breakfast.

There is also a standout dish called “Pork and Shrimp Dumpling Soup,” seasoned with Chinese spices like Ceylon pepper and fresh ginger. The chewy softness of the dumpling wrapper combined with the carefully marinated pork filling makes every bite feel like stepping back in time to an old southern Chinese market.

For those intrigued by unique flavors, I recommend the dish “Beggar's Chicken,” also known as Jiao Hua Ji (叫化鸡), which is a stuffed chicken wrapped in clay and lotus leaves, then slow-baked for hours to let the flavors deeply infuse the meat. I have shared this dish in a YouTube video.Beggar's ChickenThis is considered one of the most meticulous Chinese dishes and is hard to find in many places.

Kyaukpyu is a city by the South China Sea, making fresh seafood an indispensable ingredient in its cuisine. Although it is not a province well-known among Thai people, the delicious fusion of Chinese and Myanmar flavors makes me feel this is a new destination that food lovers should visit.

Compared to the satisfying eating experience in Tanintharyi Province that I have shared in an article,Satisfying Eel Eating in Tanintharyi Provincethere, the focus is on small eels prepared in various dishes like stir-fried eel noodles or eel curry. I think Kyaukpyu shares similarities in using fresh ingredients and strong southern Chinese seasoning, but Kyaukpyu offers a wider variety of dishes, including seafood and diverse local Chinese cuisine.

After enjoying the Chinese food at Zhao Pu, I strolled through the Kyaukpyu morning market filled with local vendors selling fresh seafood and garden produce continuously. The simple daily life here reminded me ofSuphanburi Morning Marketwhich I have visited in China. That place also has a similar vibrant atmosphere, full of fresh local products and warm people.

For travelers interested in tasting authentic Chinese food in Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, recommend coming to Kyaukpyu, especially the Zhao Pu area. Besides enjoying bold and satisfying Chinese dishes, you will experience the local lifestyle blending Chinese and Myanmar cultures perfectly. If you want to try unique dishes rarely found elsewhere, I suggest trying “Beggar's Chicken” or various dumplings and stir-fried noodles. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

For those who enjoy market walks and tasting local food, don’t forget to visit the seaside fresh market in Kyaukpyu, filled with fresh fish, shrimp, squid, and Chinese herbs that add depth to each dish. If you like bold and diverse Chinese flavors like these, be sure to read the stories and Chinese food reviews in each city that I, mr.hotsia, have documented inDelicious Hunan Food Tastingwhich also shares similarities in boldness and meticulous cooking.

Finally, I want to say that this trip to Kyaukpyu not only allowed me to enjoy satisfying, delicious, and diverse Chinese food but also to learn about the local way of life and witness the perfect cultural blend between Chinese and Myanmar. This is an experience I, mr.hotsia, will keep in my heart and want to share with everyone to come and visit.
