At Dehang Village in Jishou City, Hunan Province, China, this is home to the Miao people (Hmong as called in Thailand). Visiting this village requires an entrance ticket costing about 300-400 baht. This price includes a Miao performance lasting about 30 minutes, which is the highlight of visiting the Miao village. There are two shows daily, if I remember correctly at 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM (please confirm with them if you plan to visit).
The performance starts with solo and group drumming, followed by dances by young Miao men and women. There is a bamboo clapper dance and a musical chairs game with music and dance. Tourists are invited to join in the bamboo clapper dance and musical chairs. The most beautiful and finest costume is worn in the last act, portraying the Miao way of courting through song. After the show, you can ask to take photos; if you don't ask, the performers will quickly leave. The performers are young villagers.
The stage I visited is on the second floor of the tourist service center. Outside, there is a very large stage that can hold thousands of people, likely for large tour groups during peak seasons. This large stage has spectacular lighting and sound systems. When I visited, I only saw the small performance. If anyone sees the big show, please share your experience.
