Dehang Village (Dehang village), Jishou City (Jishou), Hunan Province (Hunan), China. This is home to the Miao people (Miao). The name Miao sounds cute like a cat's meow. They are an ethnic minority in southern China, especially in Hunan and Yunnan provinces. According to internet sources, there are up to ten million Miao people in China. Thai people know the Miao as the Hmong because many migrated to Thailand and are called Hmong here.

The Dehang village is interesting because it is surrounded by unique limestone mountains, and the rice fields nestle beautifully in the limestone valleys. Clouds often hover over the mountain peaks, and sometimes the mist creates stunning scenery. China has developed this area as a tourist stopover before traveling to Zhangjiajie. Dehang lies on the route from Fenghuang Ancient Town to Zhangjiajie, making it more suitable for a brief visit rather than an overnight stay.

However, I chose to stay overnight to fully experience the Miao lifestyle. It seems this village was built mainly for tourists. The authentic Miao culture feels somewhat altered, but the village's beauty and natural surroundings are truly impressive. I stayed one night in Dehang and woke early to walk through the Miao rice fields. It was very cold at night, definitely below freezing, but I don't know the exact temperature. Hotels here have no heaters and hot water is only available at certain times.

In summary, I didn't shower because I was too afraid to take my hands out of my gloves. It was extremely cold in January 2013. Entrance to Dehang Village costs about 300-400 baht. At the village entrance, non-residents are checked and tickets must be purchased on the spot; without a ticket, entry is prohibited. The price includes Miao performances, which are held twice daily, morning and evening. During low tourist seasons, shows take place at the tourist information center.

During peak tourist seasons, there is a large stage that can accommodate thousands of people. The site is very grand. When I visited, they were renovating the area. In the future, this will surely become one of Hunan Province's main tourist attractions. To reach Dehang, you must take a bus from Jishou City. First, travel from Fenghuang Ancient Town to Jishou, then transfer to a bus to Dehang. The bus to Dehang departs from the main bus station in Jishou.

The total travel time from Fenghuang Ancient Town to Jishou and then to Dehang is about 3 hours. Activities in Miao Village include watching Miao performances, enjoying the stunning limestone mountain scenery, cooking Thai food in the Miao kitchen, and hiking to the waterfall area in the morning. This area is called the Nine Dragon Stream Scenic Area.

I woke early to walk but only went as far as passing through the village to see the Miao people starting their morning activities. Then I followed the stream a short distance before returning to eat instant noodles at a restaurant near my accommodation. Dehang is a small town with only a few restaurants near the parking area. The menus are Chinese, and no one speaks English, so ordering was a guess. Food prices are high, but with no alternatives, I had a heavy meal at the hotel restaurant and used their kitchen to cook spicy Thai basil stir-fry.

For breakfast, I avoided the expensive dinner options and bought canned instant noodles and requested hot water to eat. For those who enjoy cold weather, this town will not disappoint. But if you have never experienced extreme cold like this, you might want to go home because it feels like sleeping inside a freezer. Still, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience worth trying. Even though I wore all my winter clothes, thermal underwear, and multiple layers, I still had to stay under the blanket all the time to keep warm.
