Traveling Hunan Province: Fenghuang Ancient Town

China. This city is an old town from the Qing Dynasty, the last dynasty of China founded by Manchus from the northern frontier. During the era of Emperor Huang Feihong and Empress Dowager Cixi, roughly around that time (B.E. 2187 - 2455). The city is located along the Tuojiang River. Fenghuang Ancient Town is beautiful because houses are built along the riverbanks, close to the water. These are old houses over a hundred years old, well preserved with roofs resembling ancient earthenware. Viewed from the bridge, the scenery is very beautiful and historic.

To travel to Fenghuang Ancient Town (Feng Huang) independently, you might travel from Guangzhou to Huaihua City, then from Huaihua to Fenghuang Ancient Town. It takes one night from Guangzhou to Huaihua. From Huaihua to Fenghuang is about one hour. I stayed one night in Huaihua. While in Huaihua, I also visited Hongjiang Ancient Town.

For visiting Fenghuang Ancient Town (Feng Huang Ancient Town), I recommend staying about 3 nights. The best time is December to January or during Thailand's winter season because the weather is pleasantly cold. I visited Fenghuang Ancient Town in December and was very impressed. I even saw snow falling there. The sun was out, the sky was clear, and the view from the bridge overlooking Fenghuang Ancient Town was stunning.

I also walked all around Fenghuang Ancient Town, exploring alleys, tasting local food, and walking along the food street. I tried duck blood cake like the locals do. I took a big detour around the town and crossed the Tuojiang River to return to Fenghuang Ancient Town again. Staying three nights allowed me to explore and understand the town and its people deeply. Accommodations in Fenghuang Ancient Town (Feng Huang hotel and guest house) can be booked in advance to ensure a place to stay.

Alternatively, you can walk in to accommodations along both sides of the Tuojiang River. The area where I stayed cost about 400 baht per night and was very comfortable. No air conditioning is needed in winter because temperatures range from 1-5 degrees Celsius, and some days have snow. Heating is available and charged hourly at 20 baht per hour. In summer, air conditioning is necessary due to the heat. The accommodation I stayed at was very good value. Restaurants in Fenghuang Ancient Town (Feng Huang food and Restaurant).

Along the Tuojiang River, there are some restaurants but not many. Restaurants with beautiful views offer reasonably priced dishes. Walking along the town's streets, you will find many noodle and made-to-order food shops. Look for simple shops that serve locals for affordable prices. Tourist-oriented shops tend to be more expensive. I saw many shops selling live animals like birds and chickens for fresh slaughter. The most popular local dish is duck blood cake, which is used in soups and stir-fries.

Many dishes are made in various ways. In the small alleys of Fenghuang Ancient Town, there are shops selling stir-fried noodles and fried rice at unbelievably cheap prices. I found one in front of a school. There is also a local food alley across the Tuojiang River bridge where Chinese people gather for dinner. Large grilled catfish, grilled fish, grilled pork, and grilled vegetables are common. Most dishes have a pungent powder seasoning similar to curry powder and are slightly oily but delicious, somewhat like Thai food.

In the food alley or pedestrian food street of Fenghuang Ancient Town, there are also Chinese hot pot dishes similar to Thai sour curry. This area mostly attracts Chinese diners; I rarely saw tourists. Mr.Hotsia had dinner twice in this alley. Another impressive thing about Fenghuang Ancient Town was the snow. Late at night while I was sound asleep, I heard tourists excitedly reacting but did not wake up to see. In the morning, I found out that snow had covered the entire ancient town.

Snow remained on many old rooftops, creating beautiful white scenes, though not heavily. I first saw snow in Moscow several years ago; this was my second time. As a farmer's son like Mr.Hotsia, I rarely get to see snow, so I was excited. After spending a week in Fenghuang, I went to Zhangjiajie and enjoyed full snow activities on the Tianmen Mountain peak.

Activities in Fenghuang Ancient Town besides sightseeing include shopping for souvenirs, which have many unique edible and usable items. There are also Chinese foot massages available. You can enjoy Hunan-style food, listen to street musicians, and cross the Tuojiang River on stepping stones. Tourist boats are available but I did not take one.

Don't forget to walk along the river to the end, then turn left to cross back the other side. In some areas, there are birds trained to catch fish with rings around their necks that prevent swallowing, demonstrated for tourists. Mr.Hotsia's top impressions of Fenghuang Ancient Town are: the beautiful riverside town, snow, Hunan girls' songs, food street, Chinese foot massage, and delicious sticky duck blood cake. Mr.Hotsia admires Hunan girls very much. Hunan girl Fenghuang Ancient Old Town, a very beautiful ancient town in China, Fenghuang Ancient Town.
