(Hongjiang Old town) (Hongjiang Old town) Hongjiang Ancient Town is located 55 kilometers from Huaihua city, about a 1-hour bus ride. This ancient town is not as beautiful as Fenghuang Ancient Town. Fenghuang is impressive because a river flows through the old town, making it picturesque. Here, although two rivers flow through the town, it is not as beautiful as Fenghuang. The rivers passing through this town are the Yuan Jiang (Yuan River) and the Wu River.
Visiting Hongjiang Ancient Town requires an entrance fee of 400 baht per person for the tourist zone. For travelers on a budget, I recommend walking past the front entrance where the fee is charged and then turning left to explore. This town is different from Miao villages like Dehang, where tickets are collected on the bus and entry is not allowed without purchase. Here, you can enter first, and those who want to enter the special zone can buy tickets later. I did not buy a ticket, so I might not have seen the full beauty of Hongjiang Ancient Town.
My recommended way to visit Hongjiang is to take a morning bus from Huaihua and stroll around in the afternoon or evening, then return without staying overnight. From Huaihua, take a bus at the South Bus Station, costing about 100 baht per person. Buses depart every 40 minutes, with the first trip around 07:00 and the last leaving Hongjiang at 18:00. A must-visit spot in this town is Taiping Temple, built in 1723.
However, I think those who do not buy tickets might find it hard to locate the temple because it is probably near the ticket booth. Hongjiang Ancient Town has many old buildings, including an ancient brothel tower seen in old Chinese movies. There are paintings of beautiful women displayed in the brothel tower. I imagined scenes of Kow Jong and Qi Zi Ling visiting such a tower and felt how ancient this town is. If you visit and have a bigger budget than me, I recommend buying a ticket to possibly discover more interesting things.
