Ancient Fenghuang City, Mao Zedong's Birthplace Hunan Province is the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong, the founder of the Chinese Communist Party. Mao Zedong's birthplace is in Shaoshan Village, about 30 kilometers from Changsha City, the capital of Hunan Province. Shaoshan City and Mao's birthplace are about 5 kilometers apart.
The birthplace is the old town of Shaoshan, while the city itself is new. Mao Zedong was born here in 1893 into a poor family. He later studied at a teacher's college and worked in a library, reading many books that gave him the knowledge to successfully lead the Chinese revolution. The birthplace we visit is a simple one-story earthen house with Mao's bed on display. Photography inside Mao's house is prohibited, with large Chinese soldiers guarding and preventing tourists from taking pictures.
Visitors must queue to enter the house and walk in a line. To visit Chairman Mao's birthplace, take the bus from the station which first takes you to the Mao Zedong Museum. Here, you can have your photo taken with a statue of Chairman Mao. The entire history is narrated in Chinese. It seems this place was mainly created to sell souvenirs. After touring the Mao Museum, the bus will take you to other sites as per the program.
Also, everyone receives a hanging card as a symbol that they came with the company's bus, so you can skip parts of the program and just flag down the company's bus to return. When I visited the Mao Museum, I walked straight to Chairman Mao's house because I planned to stay only half a day here before continuing to Zhangjiajie. When I visited in late December 2012, it was very cold. The large pond in front of Chairman Mao's house was frozen over.
In the gardens, ice covered the vegetable leaves, turning them white. I tried throwing a stick into the pond, and it bounced off the ice. It was my first time seeing water turn to ice like this. There were not many Chinese tourists, only a few hundred. Behind Chairman Mao's house, there was another souvenir shop. Here, they offered photoshopped photos with Chairman Mao, done quite neatly. I had one made as a keepsake. I don't remember the price, but it was not expensive.
When I travel and write later, I always forget prices. Inside Chairman Mao's house, I saw a rice winnowing basket similar to what we had at home when I was a child. For those visiting Shaoshan and wanting to stay overnight, there is a small hotel opposite the bus station. Look closely; the front room is small but the upper floor is spacious. I found it hard to find accommodation in Shaoshan and ended up staying at this hotel near the bus station.
To buy tickets to visit Chairman Mao's birthplace, there are buses from Shaoshan Bus Station which park at the back. There are three trips daily at 07:30, 09:00, and 13:20. The fare is about 200 baht per person, including entrance fees to various sites.
