Ancient city Fenghuang (Feng Huang) Zhangjiajie (tianmenshan) Zhangjiajie city has a cable car to the summit of Tianmen Mountain. The cable car station is near the bus and train stations of Tianmen Mountain. The summit features a natural stone arch formed by rock collapse, known as the Heavenly Gate, which has been developed into a tourist attraction of Zhangjiajie. The walking path includes the Avatar park at Zhangjiajie village (Wulingyuan scenic
area) only. To visit the summit of Tianmen Mountain, buy cable car tickets directly at the station. Taxis are available citywide. Drivers often try to sell cable car tickets; prices may be higher than at the station, so I usually say I already have tickets or say nothing. Cable car ticket prices for Zhangjiajie vary by season. In winter (December to February), Tianmen Mountain cable car operates from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. After 5:30 PM, no cable cars run down, so you must not stay overnight on the summit (see more info at http://www.tianmenshan.com.cn). Winter ticket price is 225 yuan per person, about 1125 baht (exchange rate x5). Tickets are kept as souvenirs and are non-refundable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EomLBafgwpA).
Prices are higher in other seasons because in winter you cannot walk to the Heavenly Gate, only play in the snow, so it's cheaper. The Tianmen Mountain cable car is the longest in the world, about 7.5 kilometers long, taking 40 minutes to ride. It has two sections; many think the first stop is the summit and prepare to get off, but it just pauses before continuing.
During the cable car ride, you see beautiful mountain views, but not the Avatar scenery, which is 30 kilometers away. Here you see winding mountain roads. I visited in winter with snow falling all around the cable car. The cable cars hold multiple people but can be ridden alone. You can stay on the summit as long as you want but must descend before 5:30 PM. If you want to play in the snow longer, bring snow shoes to avoid slipping off cliffs; they sell for several hundred baht. Winter on Tianmen Mountain has heavy snow at the summit.
Dress fully for cold weather: thermal gloves, thick winter jackets (not ordinary cold like home), and hats covering ears. Taking photos can be challenging in cold weather, especially handling cameras, but gloves help as fingers don’t want to be exposed. Buy winter clothes in cold cities for more options. If staying in Zhangjiajie city, I recommend watching the Zhangjiajie show.
VIP tickets cost up to 4500 baht; cheapest tickets are about 1000 baht depending on seat location. Video recording is prohibited, but my friend said photography and video are allowed. The show is spectacular, telling stories of Zhangjiajie tribes and Tianmen Mountain.
