Backpacking in Siliguri (Siliguri), the gateway to the Himalayas and Sikkim
When talking about a city that is a key connection point between the plains and the Himalayas, this city must be namedSiliguri (Siliguri)is in the heart of backpackers like me, mr.hotsia. Siliguri is located in the state of West Bengal, India, and is considered a city that covers the overall area ofDarjeeling (Darjeeling)which I have traveled to many times. Siliguri is situated on the banks of the Mahananda River and at the foothills of the Himalayas, making it the gateway to travel to the northern state of Sikkim.
For me, mr.hotsia, Siliguri is a must-stop before heading up to Darjeeling or Sikkim. The atmosphere here is unlike the cool and peaceful hill stations; Siliguri is a lively city bustling with travel and trade. At the airport and train station, tourists and locals blend together perfectly.
Experience life in an important trading city of West Bengal
If you arrive in Siliguri, I recommend taking a walk to explore the local fresh market. There is a small market along the main road heading north through the city. I have passed by and stopped at this market while preparing border crossing documents to Sikkim. This market offers fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and dried goods sold by locals, as well as general stores that provide a genuine community atmosphere. Even though it is a big city, markets like this still maintain a warm and friendly rural charm.Fresh market, Darjeeling market, IndiaThis is another spot where mr.hotsia wants you to experience the true essence of Siliguri and Darjeeling.
Additionally, getting around the city is quite convenient. There are jeeps for rent or shared taxis running on various routes. If you walk from the airport to the jeep parking area and negotiate the price well, you can get a cheaper rate than booking online through agencies. I often use this method, getting a good price and enjoying bargaining like a local.
This city is the gateway to Darjeeling and Sikkim waiting for you to explore.
If you plan to travel up to Darjeeling or Sikkim, Siliguri will be a solid base for preparation. It is easy to travel, with accommodations and restaurants ready to serve. It is also the starting point for the historic steam train journey in Darjeeling, which I have written about in an article.Traveling Darjeeling on your ownFor me, mr.hotsia, riding this vintage train feels like going back to the British colonial era, preserving the charm and classic atmosphere of the hill town perfectly.
Moreover, Darjeeling is famous for its tea, especially various types such as black tea, green tea, white tea, and oolong tea, which are fragrant and smooth in taste. I have tasted and written about them inDarjeeling Tea, IndiaAlthough I am not a tea lover, I couldn’t resist tasting and appreciating the flavors here.
Food and accommodation in Siliguri and Darjeeling
Regarding food in Siliguri and Darjeeling, I can assure you won’t go hungry. The food here is diverse, from local eateries selling fried rice, Mongolian chicken, and MOMO dishes, which are similar to xiaolongbao or steamed buns in Indian style, available steamed or fried, served with delicious dipping sauces that make you lose track of time.Darjeeling local cuisine, IndiaThis is another thing I, mr.hotsia, recommend you try.
As for accommodation, in Darjeeling, I stayed at Dekeling Hotel, which is very conveniently located near tourist walking areas, with KFC, coffee shops, a church, and an open plaza where locals like to hang out. The price was very affordable, especially during the rainy season when I visited, dropping from 2,200 THB to only 800 THB per night.Recommended hotels in Darjeeling, IndiaA great value for backpackers.
Continuing the journey to Sikkim, from Siliguri to the mountain route
