Travel Darjeeling by Yourself: The Classic Tea Town in the Himalayas
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to visit Darjeeling, a small town in the Himalayas located in West Bengal, India. This place is one of my favorite destinations for many reasons: the cool climate, the lifestyle blending diverse cultures, and most importantly, the world-famous Darjeeling tea, which I have tasted and experienced fully myself.
Getting to Darjeeling
For me, the journey started in Kolkata, where I chose to fly directly to Bagdogra Airport, about 90 kilometers from Darjeeling. Then I took a jeep taxi, either private or shared with others, to travel up to Darjeeling town. This route takes you up the mountain, passing small villages and beautiful mountain views. Riding the jeep was a fun experience and gave me a real feel of local life. For those interested in traveling by the narrow-gauge Toy Train, you can take it from Siliguri, located at the base of Darjeeling. This train was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. I also had the chance to ride the vintage steam train here, a rare retro experience in India.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle of Darjeeling
Darjeeling is situated at about 2,042 meters above sea level. The weather is comfortably cool year-round, with an average high of only 14.9°C and an average low of 8.9°C. I strolled around the town during the day; the weather was just right with a cool breeze passing by colonial-era buildings that still remain in abundance. It felt like stepping back to the 19th century when Darjeeling was a hill station for British officials in India.
I enjoyed walking through a small fresh market near the intercity bus stand. This market is where locals sell fresh and dried goods. Local foods like MOMO, similar to xiaolongbao or steamed buns, both fried and steamed, are also sold here. You can feel the cultural diversity as Darjeeling’s population includes Nepali, Hindu, Buddhist, and Tibetan communities. Even the languages spoken daily are varied, yet everyone lives together harmoniously and united in the community.

Darjeeling Tea: The King of Indian Tea
When talking about Darjeeling, no one can miss the tea here. This place produces high-quality black, green, white, and oolong teas with a delicate aroma distinct from most Indian teas. I'm not a regular tea drinker, but I couldn't resist tasting authentic Darjeeling tea to experience its flavor. The tea has a floral fragrance and a smooth, deep taste that made me feel both refreshed and warm at the same time.

Accommodation and Living in Darjeeling
Regarding accommodation in Darjeeling, I stayed at Dekeling Hotel, which is very well located near the tourist zone. There are a few coffee shops and restaurants to choose from, but the surrounding atmosphere is perfect for walking and relaxing. The price I paid during the rainy season was very cheap, about 800 baht per night, nearly three times less than the price listed on Google Maps. Staying in this town was a valuable and impressive experience. If anyone is looking for hotels in Darjeeling, you can find more information atRecommended Hotels in Darjeeling, India
For getting around town, I recommend walking more because the roads are narrow and steep. Walking allows you to see local life up close, including greeting barking dogs along the way and houses lined up throughout the route.
Culture and Education: Darjeeling from My Perspective
I was impressed by Darjeeling’s cultural diversity. This town is not just an ordinary tourist spot but also an educational center for students from India and neighboring countries. Many schools use English and Nepali as teaching languages. There are government, private, and religious institutions. Darjeeling was once home to schools inspired by the Eton and Harrow systems in England, which I think is why the town has an English-influenced atmosphere in every corner.
Additionally, Darjeeling is a city of music and art. Locals and students often sing and play music in their free time, adding color and vibrancy that make this town even more charming.
Summary of My Solo Travel Experience in Darjeeling
For me, Darjeeling is a town with deep charm in terms of geography, culture, and people. I loved the journey riding the vintage Toy Train through mountains and beautiful scenery, tasting high-quality tea, and walking through fresh markets that are not crowded with tourists. I also stayed in a budget-friendly hotel with a warm atmosphere. Everything blended perfectly, making me want to return again.
For those interested in this route, I recommend starting from Siliguri, the gateway to Darjeeling and Sikkim. You can read more aboutBackpacking in SiliguriAnd if you plan to continue to Sikkim, I have good information written inBackpacking India 38/129: Traveling from Darjeeling to Gangtok.
Finally, traveling Darjeeling by yourself is not as difficult as you might think. Just have a heart to experience the lifestyle and nature of this small Himalayan town, and I assure you will take home precious memories and touching experiences.
