Backpacking Northern India 10/45: Khantoke of the Tai People in India

When talking about Northern India, many might think of the grandeur of the Himalayas or ancient cities filled with temples. But for this mr.hotsia trip, it brought a surprising experience of the “Khantoke of the Tai people in India,” a unique blend of Thai-Tai culture with Northern Indian lifestyle.

I started my journey from Namchi, a small town in Northern India that many might not be familiar with. But for those who have followed me inTraveling Namchiyou can imagine the tranquility and natural beauty surrounding this town, where Samdruptse Temple and Ngadok Monastery are spiritual centers for local Buddhists. I have also visited to pay respects and deeply experience the peaceful atmosphere there.

But on this trip, what excited me the most was experiencing the Tai community living in Northern India and participating in their Khantoke ceremony, which is an important ritual for them. The Khantoke of the Tai people in Northern India is not just an ordinary meal but a meaningful event rich in culture and tradition.

Khantoke of the Tai People: A Unique Cultural Gathering

The Khantoke here is not like the Chiang Mai Khantoke we are familiar with, but a traditional round wooden tray meal arrangement featuring Tai local dishes blended with Northern Indian ingredients and flavors in an interesting way. I had the chance to sit at the table with locals speaking a mix of Tai and Hindi. The atmosphere was warm, like close relatives sharing a meal together.

The menu served ranged from steaming soft white rice to rich spicy curry with Northern Indian herbs, pickled vegetables with a sweet and sour taste like back home, and not to be missed was the "grilled pork" or grilled meat marinated with local spices giving off a fragrant aroma. This was the moment I felt that even far from home, the Tai people in Northern India still firmly preserve their unique identity.

Moreover, eating Khantoke was an opportunity for locals to exchange daily life stories, beliefs, and traditions passed down through generations. I found it remarkable that the Tai lifestyle in Northern India remains strongly connected to their roots despite being in a different land.

Travel and Surrounding Atmosphere

Getting here was not easy. It required contacting locals and preparing for winding and sometimes challenging roads. I chose to travel by local car drivers familiar with the routes for safety and convenience, similar to experiences I had inTraveling to Darjeelingwhere relying on drivers who know the roads well is essential.

The surroundings were full of high mountains and vast meadows where trees and wildflowers blended harmoniously. The weather was cool and comfortable, even though Northern India has a variable climate. The freshness of nature made me feel relaxed and fully absorb the beauty.

Connecting with Other Interesting India Trips

This trip reminded me of my travel experiences in major Indian cities like Bangalore, where I experienced city life and tasted authentic South Indian cuisine inBackpacking Bangaloreor even traveling to Mumbai, full of history and cultural diversity inBackpacking MumbaiBut this time, mr.hotsia was brought to experience the peace and community of the Tai people in Northern India, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

If anyone is interested in following my footsteps to experience the Khantoke of the Tai people in Northern India, I recommend preparing to contact the locals in advance and open your heart to this perfectly blended culture. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
