Backpacking India 105/129: Masala Chai Tea in Tinsukia - Local tea in Tinsukia, Assam, India

When talking about India, many might think of big cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Chennai, which I have already shared inBackpacking MumbaiorBackpacking BengaluruBut this time, mr.hotsia invites everyone to experience India not just as a capital or metropolis, but the real life of locals in Tinsukia, a small town in Assam state in Northeast India.

Tinsukia is not on the main tourist routes in India. This town still preserves the simplicity and traditional lifestyle of the Assamese people firmly. I arrived in Tinsukia in the morning; the weather was cool and comfortable. The scent of tea leaves and mist in the air gave a rare sense of peace not found in big cities.

Local tea, Masala chai, that warmed my heart

My main intention on this trip was to taste Masala Chai, the spiced tea locals drink every morning. It differs from teas sold in big cities because here they add spices like ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and clove into hot milk tea, creating a smooth flavor and an aromatic scent that awakens the senses.

I found a small local tea stall by the roadside in the Tinsukia market. It was a small wooden stall without a name, but people kept coming to buy tea continuously. The owner, an elderly man, smiled when I asked about his Masala chai recipe. He said, “This is the heart of Assam. Every step is made with care, every spice added with heart.”

Sipping the hot tea slowly to balance the spiciness of the spices reminded me of the simple yet charming life of the locals here, which is vastly different from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

Tinsukia Market: Unique lifestyle and colors

After drinking the hot tea, I wandered through Tinsukia’s fresh market. The market isn’t large but is full of fresh produce and local goods rarely found elsewhere. Fresh vegetables, local fruits, and a variety of spices used in Masala Chai and Assamese traditional dishes.

The joy of walking through Tinsukia’s market is talking with the vendors. Everyone here is friendly and happy to share their life stories. I tried local sweets and learned that Assamese people like sweets made with nuts and palm sugar, which is very different from sweets in other parts of India.

Connections to other cities in Northeast India

Tinsukia is located in the region called Northeast India, which has distinct cultural and geographical differences. For those interested in mountain scenery and Buddhist temples combined with local lifestyles, I recommend checking outTraveling Namchiwhich shares experiences of beautiful mountain journeys along with viewing large Buddha statues and peaceful Sikkim temples.

Traveling from big cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai to Tinsukia may take time and effort, but for mr.hotsia, that is the charm of backpacking in India. It’s not just about convenience but the diversity of people and cultures waiting to be experienced firsthand.

Travel tips and advice from mr.hotsia

For those interested in trying authentic Masala Chai in Tinsukia, it’s best to come in the morning or early afternoon because most local tea stalls open only during these times. To get here, you usually need to fly to the nearest airport, or if you enjoy challenges, you can take a train or bus from other major cities in Assam.

I would like to share a video I recorded while drinking local Masala chai in Tinsukia, so you can see the real atmosphere from the streets and this small tea stall.Masala chai tea in Tinsukia - Local tea in Tinsukia, Assam, IndiaThis video conveys the warmth of local tea that deeply impressed me.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s impressions from Tinsukia

Tinsukia may not be a city many are familiar with or on India’s main travel lists, but for mr.hotsia, it is one of the destinations that allowed me to experience the true India — a lifestyle that remains simple yet full of unique stories and deep flavors.

If you want to experience a different side of India and try Masala Chai not sold in fancy cafes but made from the heart of local people, Tinsukia is a destination I want everyone to try at least once. mr.hotsia guarantees this experience will be unforgettable.
