Backpacking India 107/129: TINSUKIA ASSAM INDIA Tinsukia City, Assam, India

When talking about India, many people probably think of big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, or Chennai, but for me, mr.hotsia, this trip takes us deep into a small town that backpack travelers might never have heard of, which isTinsukiain Assam state, in the northeast of India

Tinsukia is a city completely different from the southern or central Indian cities I have visited before. It is peaceful yet full of the vibrant life of the Assamese people who still maintain traditional lifestyles, blended with cultural diversity and rich nature. The town is not as hectic as Mumbai or Bangalore but has a unique charm that makes me want to share it with everyone.

Traveling to Tinsukia

From my experience, mr.hotsia, traveling to Tinsukia is not easy. I chose a domestic flight from Kolkata to a nearby airport, then took a local car driven by an experienced driver through green mountainous terrain and large rivers. It felt like entering another world, still untouched by many foreign tourists.

Many who are interested in this route might want to know if it is similar to traveling toDarjeelingI can say there are similarities in terms of nature and tranquility, but Tinsukia offers the full flavor of Assamese culture.

Local Lifestyle and Culture

Tinsukia is a city that blends indigenous tribes and Indians from other parts of the country. I had the chance to walk through the morning market, meeting locals selling fresh fruits, local vegetables, and famous Assam tea, a local beverage not to be missed.

What impressed me most was the friendliness of the people here, from market vendors to jeep drivers who took me to various viewpoints and happily shared stories and the city's history openly.

Delicious Assamese Cuisine

Food is another charm of Tinsukia that mr.hotsia did not miss tasting. Assamese cuisine is distinct from South or North Indian food. Here, fresh herbs and spices are used without being overly spicy. I tried "Pitika," a local dish made from mashed vegetables and grilled fish, with a mild flavor, and also "Assam Laksa," a soup similar to tom yum but with a perfectly balanced sweet and sour taste.

Additionally, the market in Tinsukia offers local snacks called "Jolpan," a set of snacks and sticky rice to try with hot tea made from Assam tea leaves, which helps to wake up and warm you in the cool morning air.

Nature and Attractions Around the City

Tinsukia is located in a valley surrounded by rivers and mountains. I visited an old tea garden and took a short forest walk along natural trails with beautiful scenery. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities.

If you are interested in learning more about the nature and culture of Northeast India, I recommend exploring nearby areas like Namchi, which is not far away.Traveling to NamchiBesides seeing the beautiful giant Buddha statue Samdruptse, you can experience the peaceful atmosphere of Ngadok Monastery, filled with Buddhist paintings and art.

Experience Life with mr.hotsia in Tinsukia

Throughout the trip in Tinsukia, I traveled with an open heart, ready to embrace new experiences, whether riding a jeep through small villages, chatting with locals who made me feel warmly at home, or tasting exquisite local food. All these are memories I want to share with everyone who loves backpacking.

If you are a traveler wanting to experience India from a different perspective than usual, Tinsukia in Assam is an interesting and worthwhile destination to visit.
