Backpacking India 114/129: Searching for Thai People in Namphake Village, Assam, India goto Namphake

When talking about India, many might think of big cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, or Chennai. But for me, mr.hotsia, this trip to India took me much further—to a small village called “Namphake” in Assam state, in northeast India. This is home to a Thai community that still preserves their traditional lifestyle and culture in a fascinating way.

Traveling to Namphake village is not easy. You must start from the nearest big city by local car, passing winding roads with almost no mobile signal throughout the route. It feels like stepping into another world that fully retains the purity of nature and indigenous culture. I, mr.hotsia, must say this journey was challenging and exciting because I learned a way of life completely different from the big cities in India.

Life and Culture in Namphake Village

Upon arriving at Namphake, the first thing you feel is the warmth of the community. They still speak an ancient form of Thai similar to that of northern Thailand. They wear traditional clothing and live simply, surrounded by lush green rice fields and mist-covered mountains in the early morning. The peaceful atmosphere is clearly different from the hustle and bustle of the big cities I have visited.

What’s interesting is their preservation of Thai customs, such as making sticky rice, organic vegetable farming, and organizing traditional Thai festivals. It reminded me of my hometown without realizing it. I strolled through the small community market where many local foods are worth trying, including fragrant spiced biryani and traditional sweets made from local ingredients.

Or if you want to know northeast India more deeply, which I have introduced inTraveling Namchiit will help you get a better overall picture of this ethnically and religiously diverse region.

Travel and Contact with Locals

Reaching Namphake requires planning and contacting local people. I, mr.hotsia, recommend finding a driver familiar with the route and don’t forget to prepare rain gear and suitable shoes because some roads are still dirt tracks and can be slippery during rain.

Moreover, talking with locals opens your perspective and helps you understand their way of life better. I exchanged stories with elders who told me about the history of the Thai community here, preserving their native language, and adapting to the surrounding Indian society. It was a valuable lesson I want to share with all fellow travelers.
