Backpacking India 12/1299: Eating Ancient Thai Food in the Tai Village of Assam, Phingyiot Village

For me, mr.hotsia, this trip to India is special in a way different from the usual trips I've experienced. This time, I had the opportunity to visit a hidden Thai village in the state of Assam, located in the northeast of India. This community is known as the "Tai Phake," an ancient Thai ethnic group that migrated and settled here hundreds of years ago.

Reaching Phingyiot Village is not easy. You must travel along winding mountain roads and lush green forests of Assam, filled with freshness and the pure scent of nature. From the simple bamboo houses with thatched roofs, I experienced a lifestyle that firmly preserves traditional customs.

The most exciting thing for mr.hotsia on this trip was tasting the ancient Thai food prepared daily by the Tai Phake people. The delicious and unique flavors reminded me exactly of my hometown in Thailand. The taste is spicy yet mellow, with spices and herbs grown locally, such as carefully cooked jasmine rice, traditional fermented fish sauce, and fresh vegetables picked from the backyard garden.

My favorite dishes that I couldn't miss were “Sour Curry with Nile Tilapia,” made with local fish combined with authentic Thai herbs, offering a perfectly balanced sweet and sour taste, and “Pork Larb,” seasoned with chili powder and fresh herbs like kaffir lime leaves and mint, delivering the bold flavors typical of Isan cuisine from home.

Besides the food, conversations with the villagers were another unforgettable memory. The Tai Phake people shared stories of their ancestors who traveled to this remote land while preserving Thai culture and language in every meal and religious ceremony. I saw the locals smiling brightly, proud to maintain their identity despite being far from their homeland.

If you follow me, mr.hotsia, you know I've visited many cities in India, such asChi River Tourfilled with temples and the atmosphere of Buddhists, orBackpacking Bengalurua technology city full of modernity. But visiting the Thai village in Assam this time made me feel closer to my roots.

Traveling in Assam itself is another challenging experience due to the complex mountainous terrain and narrow roads. To reach Phingyiot Village, you must rely on local vehicles and guides familiar with the routes. I recommend preparing your body and staying patient during the journey, as the scenic natural views along the way will make you forget your fatigue.

Culturally, the Tai Phake village has interesting rituals and traditions, especially the Songkran festival, which is still celebrated just like in Thailand. I had the chance to join the event and experience the fun and warmth of the community, which left a lasting impression on me.

For anyone interested in experiencing a different and profound travel experience in India, I recommend opening your heart to Assam and the Tai Phake village. You will gain knowledge of culture, history, and most importantly, ancient Thai food that you won't find anywhere else.

If you want to see more details of my journey, mr.hotsia, including video clips of the food atmosphere in this village, you can follow the videoBackpacking India 12/1299: Eating Ancient Thai Food in the Tai Village of Assam, Phingyiot Villagewhich clearly shows the real scenes and my feelings.

Finally, I, mr.hotsia, want to say that traveling in India has many charms, from big cities with modernity likeBengaluruto the deep cultures of various tribes scattered across the country. But for me, experiencing the Thai village in Assam that still preserves ancient Thai food and culture is the most valuable experience I gained from this trip.
